Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mr. Chen
The purpose of my writing today is to inform you about the complains we have been receiving from most of our visitors about the reception area.
The main concern appears to be is in the reception it it often get very crowded in evening and there is not much sitting arrangement for the customers they have to stand for long hours until there turn. Secondly, there is only one receptionist at a time and its hard to address all the customers at same time, this leads to another reason for alot of mistake made while appointments.
I believe the reception area is most important for the company as it reflects our first impression. Visitor involve our recurring customers, new customers and also our business partners. Apart from that, if the reception area is welcoming and provides a good environment for everyone it will project a more positive image of the company
I am looking forward to seeing how my suggestions translate into prompt action from your side. Your kind cooperation would be most appreciated.
Your Sincerely,
Gagandeep Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all three bullet points of the prompt effectively. You clearly described the complaints regarding overcrowding and staffing, explained the importance of the reception area as a 'first impression' for stakeholders, and provided actionable suggestions. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. To reach a higher band, ensure that your suggestions are slightly more detailed; for example, you could suggest specific solutions like installing more chairs or implementing a digital booking system to address the staffing issues mentioned. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Secondly' and 'Apart from that' to transition between ideas. However, the flow is occasionally interrupted by minor mechanical errors, such as the repetitive use of 'it' in the second paragraph ('it it often get'). Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different requirements of the task. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that referencing is precise to avoid confusion for the reader.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'recurring customers', 'prompt action', and 'positive image'. There are some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'complains' (should be the noun 'complaints') and 'alot' (should be 'a lot'). Additionally, the phrase 'mistake made while appointments' is slightly unnatural. To achieve a higher score, focus on using more precise collocations and ensure that you distinguish clearly between word forms (e.g., verb vs. noun).
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('it often get' instead of 'gets') and punctuation errors (missing commas after introductory phrases). The sentence 'The main concern appears to be is in the reception' is grammatically redundant. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic errors in tense and agreement, and try to incorporate more varied complex sentence structures to demonstrate greater control over your writing.
