Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Manager,
I am writing to suggest some improvements to the reception area, as several visitors have recently complained about its condition and lack of facilities.
Firstly, some visitors have mentioned that the reception area is often crowded, particularly during busy hours and there are not enough chairs for people who are waiting. In addition, the area can sometimes appear untidy because there are not enough waste bins. Some visitors have also complained that the reception desk is difficult to locate when they enter the building.
The reception area is particularly crucial because it is the first place that visitors see when they arrive at our company. Therefore, a clean, comfortable and well organized reception area can create a positive first impression and make visitors fell welcome and respected.
I would suggest adding more comfortable seating and placing additional waste bins around the area. It would also be useful to install a clear sign directing visitors to the reception disk.
I hope you will consider these suggestions, as I believe they would significantly improve visitor's experience.
Yours sincerely,
Vishal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response fully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly describe the complaints regarding crowding, lack of seating, and poor signage. You explain the importance of the reception area as the 'first place that visitors see' and provide logical, actionable suggestions for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager, and the purpose is clear from the beginning. The ideas are well-developed and the response maintains a consistent focus on the task requirements throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a polite closing. You use cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'In addition', 'Therefore', and 'It would also be useful' to link your ideas effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different points of the letter. The progression of ideas is smooth, and the relationship between the complaints, the importance of the area, and the proposed solutions is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a professional context, such as 'crucial', 'positive first impression', and 'significantly improve'. There are a few minor slips, such as 'fell' instead of 'feel' and 'reception disk' instead of 'reception desk'. While these are minor, they prevent the vocabulary from being considered fully sophisticated. However, the range is sufficient to convey your meaning with precision and flexibility, and the errors do not impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most sentences are error-free, and your control of grammar is generally strong. There are a few minor errors, such as the spelling mistake 'fell' (feel) and the possessive error 'visitor's experience' (should be 'visitors'' as it refers to multiple visitors). Despite these occasional slips, the majority of your sentences are accurate, and your punctuation is generally correct, which supports clear communication.
