Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Manager,

I am writing this letter in regards with the conversation we had yesterday about the lobby complaints by the visitors. I will mention some of the complaints that were made and can be improved from our end.

One of the visitors was complaining about the elevator that it is very slow and they have to wait for very long time and the lobby does not have seating arrangements. The other one was the ambience and odour.

As you know first impression is the last impression. we always need to keep the area clean and tidy. The receptionist is a gentlemen but face problem from the visitors as they have lots of issue in the building.

I would suggest to bring two benches and have more plants with room freshners which can make it beautiful and odour free. I would also request to call the elevator technician to make the lift quicker.

That's all about my suggestion but you can also put a suggestion box in front of the reception that can give you better idea and advice.

your faithful,

Surya Dulawat

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points required by the task: describing the complaints, explaining the importance of the reception area, and suggesting improvements. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a manager. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the explanation of why the reception is important is brief, and the description of the complaints could be more detailed to provide a clearer picture for your manager. To improve, try to expand on your points with slightly more descriptive language or specific examples of how these issues impact the company's reputation.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a logical structure, with each paragraph focusing on a specific part of the prompt. You use basic paragraphing effectively to separate your points. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. Transitions between sentences could be smoother; for instance, the jump between the complaints and the importance of the reception area is a bit abrupt. Using a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'furthermore', 'consequently', 'in addition to this') would help the flow of your writing and improve the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'ambience', 'odour', and 'seating arrangements'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'in regards with' (should be 'in regard to' or 'regarding') and 'gentlemen' (should be 'gentleman'). Additionally, 'room freshners' is a spelling error. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and ensure that your word forms are accurate in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'the elevator that it is very slow' (redundant pronoun), 'face problem' (missing article/pluralization), and 'your faithful' (incorrect closing). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with capitalization at the start of sentences. While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct article usage will help improve your accuracy.
