Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear sir, madam

i I am writing you about my concerns regarding the reception area and how that has impacted our visitors.

i want to bring into your attention that recently a lot of visitors have complained regarding poor staff facilities . one main reason is nobody is there to help or sometimes there is no staff at the desk either they are on their break or not at the desk. Visitors need to fill the form when they come in even after having the form and all the documents required they are made to sit and their time is wasted which is very important for our clients. Also, wifi connections have been not quite good from past 2 weeks.

The reception area is meant to be helpful for all the visitors . It is a first point of contact where everyone meets and all the problems are meant to be solved if nobody is there to attend it leaves a bad impact on the company as well.

The reception area could be improved by providing well trained staff as it is a central hub to ask any kind of questions More staff should be there for cleanliness as that leaves an impact on a company as a whole. People should be greeted with a smile and should be there to help at all times.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points of the prompt: describing complaints, explaining the importance of the area, and suggesting improvements. Your ideas are relevant and clearly presented. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, while you mention that visitors' time is wasted, you could have expanded on the professional consequences of this. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a manager, though the opening 'Dear sir, madam' is slightly generic. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is fully extended with more specific detail or professional justification.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Also' and 'The reception area could be improved by', to link your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical. The use of referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the phrase 'how that has impacted', where the antecedent is slightly ambiguous. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that your transitions between the problem and the solution are smoother and more sophisticated.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to communicate your points effectively, such as 'first point of contact' and 'central hub'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'wifi connections have been not quite good' (should be 'unreliable' or 'poor') and 'bring into your attention' (should be 'bring to your attention'). There are also some minor spelling and punctuation errors, such as the repeated 'i' and the lack of capitalization. While these do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('fill the form' instead of 'fill out a form'), incorrect verb tenses ('have been not quite good'), and run-on sentences. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with capitalization and spacing after periods. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. Increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring they are error-free will help you achieve a higher score in this criterion.
