Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing a letter to give suggestion about how significant improvements can be done to reduce complaints regarding reception area.

Recently, we have been seen several complaints coming from the visitors regarding our reception area. One of the visitor says that office front desk area is crowded and long waiting time for getting information.

I believe front desk area plays vital role in our office because it is the first point of contact for visitors and creates the first impression of the organization. Is also helps manage visitors efficiently and provide them with the information and assistance they need.

We should have to focusing on reducing waiting times and improving communication with visitors. Moreover, make the reception area welcoming with some modern decorative ideas, improve appointment scheduling, establish regular cleaning and implement the information displays for the visitors.

I would be grateful if you consider my ideas and thoughts for improving reception area.

Yours sincerely,

Lovepreet kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the task: describing complaints, explaining the importance of the reception area, and suggesting improvements. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the suggestions for improvement are listed in a single sentence without much elaboration or explanation of how they would specifically solve the mentioned problems. To reach a higher band, you should expand on your suggestions, perhaps explaining the benefit of each proposed change in more detail to demonstrate a more thorough engagement with the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Moreover' and 'I believe', to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes slightly mechanical. For instance, the transition between the description of the complaints and the importance of the area could be smoother. Additionally, the use of referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as in the sentence 'Is also helps manage visitors', where the subject pronoun is incorrect. Overall, the structure is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'significant improvements', 'first point of contact', and 'efficiently'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'we have been seen several complaints' should be 'we have seen' or 'there have been'. The phrase 'implement the information displays' is slightly unnatural; 'install' or 'introduce' would be more appropriate. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score. Expanding your range of collocations would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are several grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'One of the visitor says' (should be 'visitors say'), 'We should have to focusing' (should be 'We should focus'), and 'Is also helps' (should be 'It also helps'). These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable but do not generally impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of modal verbs and gerunds. Increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring accuracy will help you achieve a higher score.
