Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr. Brown,

I am writing to make some suggestions that can be taken in to consideration to improve the front desk area of our company.

Upon reviewing the company's feedback emails, I have noticed quite a lot of complaints about the unstable wifi. People are unsatisfied with the poor connectivity while waiting on the reception area. Furthermore, there are complaints about the cleanliness of the waiting area.

Reception area is the first place where guests come and if they don't get the satisfying experience there. Most likely people will not get the good impression of the company. Also, sometime because of the poor connectivity people are not able to pay through online payment gateways. As a result, it delays in customer waiting time.

I believe we need to change our broadband provider because we have already made several complaints to the current provider and it is not worth waiting anymore. also, we should give the final warning to the housekeeping staff to improve the tideness of the reception area.

I hope you take this suggestions in to cosiderations. Look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully

John Smith

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points of the prompt effectively. You clearly described the complaints regarding Wi-Fi and cleanliness, explained the importance of the reception area as the company's 'first impression', and provided actionable suggestions. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for instance, you could elaborate on how the Wi-Fi issues specifically impact the company's professional reputation beyond just payment delays. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Also', and 'As a result' to link ideas. However, the transition between the importance of the reception area and the specific suggestions could be smoother. Additionally, some sentences are slightly fragmented, such as 'Reception area is the first place...', which lacks an article. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring consistent paragraph structure would enhance the flow of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'connectivity', 'broadband provider', and 'housekeeping staff'. However, there are some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'tideness' (tidiness) and 'cosiderations' (considerations). Some phrasing is slightly repetitive or basic, such as 'get the satisfying experience' or 'get the good impression'. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and ensure accurate spelling of common professional terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as missing articles ('in the reception area', 'the reception area'), subject-verb agreement issues ('take this suggestions'), and preposition errors ('in to consideration'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy—specifically articles and pluralization—will significantly improve your control over the language.
