Student answer (Band 9.0)
Dear Mr. Johnson,
I am writing to raise some concerns about our reception area, following several complaints from visitors, and to suggest a few ways we might improve it.
Over the past month, a number of visitors have commented that the reception area feels cramped and outdated. Some have mentioned having to stand while waiting, as there are only two chairs available, and others have complained about the lack of clear signage directing them to the correct department. A few clients have also noted that the area looks untidy, with old magazines and leaflets left lying around.
I believe it is worth addressing these issues promptly, as the reception area is the first impression visitors have of our company. A welcoming, professional space reflects positively on our organisation and helps build client confidence right from the moment they walk through the door.
With this in mind, I would suggest investing in more comfortable seating, installing clear digital signage, and perhaps updating the decor with fresh paint and better lighting. It might also help to have a member of staff dedicated to greeting visitors during busy periods.
I would be happy to discuss these suggestions further at your convenience.
Yours sincerely,
[Your name]

The tone is professional and appropriate for a letter to a manager. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. You have successfully met all requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 9.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing each prompt requirement, and a professional closing. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is smooth. You use cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Over the past month', 'With this in mind', and 'I believe it is worth addressing', which help guide the reader through your argument. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall clarity of the message. The flow of information is natural and easy to follow throughout the entire response.
Lexical Resource — Band 8.5
You demonstrate a wide range of vocabulary that is both precise and natural. Phrases such as 'raise some concerns', 'client confidence', and 'at your convenience' are used accurately and fit the formal context of the letter perfectly. There is a good use of collocations, and the language is sophisticated without being forced. You avoid repetition and use varied terminology to describe the issues and solutions. The vocabulary is well-suited to the task and shows a high level of control over word choice and style.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 9.0
