Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir

I am writing to suggest you some modifications required to improved the reception area. Visitors are always complaining about the insufficient lighting and air-conditioning which we have checked and found that the complaints are correct. The average luminance for the reception area should be 100 lux but we found currently it is around 75-80 lux. We have checked the air-conditioning system and found that two chillers don't work properly when the outside heat is high.

Our reception area is always busy since the customer care department is in the same building and every day on an average 50 customers come here.

I think this area has particular importance since it represent how we value our customers. It is also giving a false impression of our well established company. So I think we should start working to improve this are by installing more lights at specific points and repairing or replacing the faulty chillers.

I hope my suggestions will be useful to you.

Yours Faithfully

Jamil

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: describing the complaints, explaining the importance of the area, and suggesting improvements. Your ideas are relevant and clearly presented. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat brief. For instance, while you mention the importance of the reception area, expanding slightly more on the impact on company reputation would have strengthened the response. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager, and the purpose of the communication is clear from the outset. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is fully extended with more descriptive detail.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the problem to the justification and finally to the proposed solutions. Paragraphing is used to separate these distinct ideas, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'However' or 'Therefore' (though you used 'So' and 'It is also'), but the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect your sentences more fluidly. Some transitions between sentences feel slightly mechanical, but the overall structure is clear and easy to follow throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'modifications', 'insufficient', 'luminance', and 'impression'. There are some minor errors in word choice and form, such as 'to improved' (should be 'to improve') and 'this are' (should be 'this area'). While you successfully convey your meaning, the vocabulary is generally functional rather than sophisticated. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations or less common synonyms to demonstrate a broader lexical range. The current level is sufficient to communicate your points clearly without causing confusion for the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I am writing to suggest...' and 'I think this area has particular importance since it represent...'. There are several grammatical slips, such as subject-verb agreement errors ('it represent' instead of 'it represents') and incorrect verb forms ('to improved'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, though the letter would benefit from more careful proofreading to catch these small errors. The errors do not impede communication, but they do prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Focus on consistent verb tense usage and subject-verb agreement.
