Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Manager,
I am writing this in response to dissatisfaction showed by multiple clients regarding the reception area. I would like to purpose some improvements that could make it more welcoming and comfortable for visitors.
Several visitors have commented that the reception area is conjusted and poorly organised, particularly during busy hours. In addition, there is limited seating, and some of the furniture apears to be old and uncomfort uncomfortable. Moreover, there is no clear signs or instructions of waiting area and whom to contact for assistance.
Reception area plays a crucial role because it creates the first impression of our company. A clean, comfortable and well-organised reception can make visitors feel welcome and can also reflect the company's professional standards.
Therefore, I would recommend replacing the old furniture and adding several comfortable chairs. It would also be beneficial to install clear signs indicating the reception desk, waiting area and meeting rooms. Furthermore, some indoor plants and improved lighting could make the area more pleasant and attractive.
Finally, providing a small information desk or digital screen could help visitors find the information they need more easily.
I hope you will consider these suggestions. I believe these changes would significantly improves visitor's experiance and create a more professional first impression of our company.
Yours sincerely,
Rajpreet.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe the complaints regarding the reception area, explain its importance in terms of first impressions, and provide actionable suggestions for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager, and the purpose is clear from the outset. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, showing a good understanding of the task requirements. To reach a higher band, ensure that all ideas are fully expanded; for instance, you could briefly explain how the digital screen would specifically assist visitors beyond just 'finding information'. Overall, the response is complete and well-focused.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Moreover', 'Therefore', and 'Furthermore' to link your sentences and paragraphs effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter. The flow is smooth, and the relationship between the complaints, the importance of the area, and the proposed solutions is logical and easy to follow. No significant issues with cohesion were noted.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas clearly and precisely. Phrases like 'professional standards', 'crucial role', and 'significantly improves' are used effectively. However, there are a few spelling errors, such as 'conjusted' (congested), 'apears' (appears), and 'experiance' (experience), as well as a minor word choice error ('purpose' instead of 'propose'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching the highest band. Expanding your vocabulary to include more sophisticated collocations would further enhance your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear and grammatically sound, such as 'A clean, comfortable and well-organised reception can make visitors feel welcome'. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as 'dissatisfaction showed' (dissatisfaction shown), 'no clear signs' (no clear signs exist/there are no clear signs), and 'significantly improves' (should be 'improve' to match the modal 'would'). Despite these occasional errors, the meaning is never obscured, and the control of grammar is generally good throughout the letter.
