Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear sir,

In this letter I will discuss about the improvement of the company's reception area and all the complaints we get from the visitors.

Visitors have been made so many issues to find our inquiry desk. Also, they complained that it is very difficult to reach to the receptionist becuase our helpline number is not working properly.

I believe that reception area plays an important role for each company. Customer get all the basic answers of their query from the desk. Moreover, we can maintain the visitors record at the inquiry desk incase in future if we want to contact them again.

According to me, we have to put the direction board towards the reception area so it will make easy for the visitors to reach there.

Furthermore, we can also improve our customer service support so we can resolve all the inquiry regarding the company.

I hope this changes can improved our reception area better.

Yours Faithfully.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points: describing complaints, explaining the importance of the reception area, and suggesting improvements. However, the development of these points is somewhat basic. For instance, the complaints are mentioned briefly, and the suggestions for improvement lack specific detail (e.g., what kind of 'customer service support' should be improved). While the tone is appropriate for a letter to a manager, the ideas could be expanded further to fully satisfy the requirements of a higher band. The response covers the task requirements sufficiently but remains at a functional level.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Also', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore', though some of these transitions feel a bit mechanical. The referencing is generally clear, although the flow between sentences could be smoother. The structure is adequate for a formal letter, but the lack of more sophisticated linking words or varied sentence structures limits the score. Overall, the information is arranged coherently, and the paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different points requested in the prompt.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There are some awkward collocations, such as 'Visitors have been made so many issues' (which should be 'Visitors have raised many issues') and 'resolve all the inquiry' (which should be 'resolve all inquiries'). The range of vocabulary is limited to common, everyday words. To achieve a higher score, you should aim to use more precise terminology related to business and customer service, such as 'signage', 'accessibility', or 'streamline', rather than relying on basic verbs and nouns.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Examples include 'I will discuss about' (should be 'I will discuss'), 'reach to the receptionist' (should be 'reach the receptionist'), 'Customer get' (should be 'Customers get'), and 'I hope this changes can improved' (should be 'I hope these changes can improve'). These errors are noticeable and occur throughout the text, though they do not prevent the reader from understanding the message. A wider range of error-free complex structures is needed to move into the higher bands.
