IELTS Writing Task 1 question
There have been several complaints about the reception area where visitors to your company arrive. Your manager has asked you to suggest how the reception area could be improved.
Write a letter to your manager. In your letter
- describe the complaints that have been made
- say why the reception area is important
- suggest how the reception area could be improved
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ................. ,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing this letter regarding a suggestion for how we can develop our reception area.
To begin with, we have received numerous complaints from Mr.Smith who came last week on 8th of August to attend a meeting for our new project. At that time, an immediate issue came into the office and the only attendant was available in our office. Therefore, Mr.Smith had to wait for 10 minutes longer. Because of this, he was dissatisfied with our welcome.
Furthermore, the reception area is really crucial, as everyone can get perfect direction of office where to meet which person, in which office and book appointments on time, along with receiving calls from clients and do some extra chores can be hectic for some receptions during busy hours.
Finally, I would be grateful if you could arrange 2 receptionist at the same time, so that in an emergency another could handle these kinds of circumstances very well; from my perspective, our company's impression could be better if we take this step.
I would really appreciate your attention to this matter and look forward to receiving your response.
Your faithfully,
Afroza

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: describing the complaints, explaining the importance of the reception area, and suggesting improvements. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the explanation of why the reception area is important is a bit cluttered and could be more clearly articulated. Additionally, the description of the complaint is slightly confusing, as the phrase 'an immediate issue came into the office' is vague. To reach a higher band, ensure that your explanations are more precise and fully developed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter follows a logical structure with clear paragraphing. You use some cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'Finally' to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the flow within the second paragraph is slightly disjointed due to the long, run-on sentence structure. The referencing is generally clear, though the connection between the complaint and the suggested solution could be more tightly linked to improve the overall flow of the argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'numerous', 'dissatisfied', and 'circumstances'. There are some minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'get perfect direction of office' (which should be 'receive clear directions') and 'do some extra chores' (which is slightly informal for this context). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning, it lacks the precision and sophistication required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'the only attendant was available' (which implies a lack of staff rather than a busy one), 'arrange 2 receptionist' (should be plural 'receptionists'), and 'Your faithfully' (should be 'Yours faithfully'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and pluralization will help improve your accuracy.
