Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mr.Smith,
I hope you are doing well.I am writing this letter to inform you about the complaints about reception area and will be delighted to suggest ways to improve it.
First of all, most of the customers argue that there is no proper seating arrangement at the reception area. They have to wait for hours to meet the concerned person while standing. In addition, the person assigned at the reception desk does not deal them nicely. She behaves good only with the people she knows but behaves rudely and arrogantly with others.
As you know reception area is the first area that an outsider comes across when he visits our company. It has a huge impact in portraying him the picture of our company. So it is very important that we organize this area well.
Firstly, there should be a proper seating area for the visitors to relax while waiting. Also the staff appointed at the reception area must have good communication skills and would be helping towards others.
If we bring the following amendments to our company's reception area , it can create a positive image in the minds of people about our company.I hope you will consider my suggestions.Looking forward to hearing positive from you.
Yours faithfully,
Tehreem Asif

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: describing the complaints, explaining the importance of the reception area, and suggesting improvements. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, though they could be developed with slightly more specific detail to reach a higher band. For example, when mentioning the receptionist's behavior, providing a specific instance or a more formal description of the unprofessional conduct would strengthen the argument. Overall, the response is well-focused and fulfills the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which aids readability. Cohesive devices such as 'First of all,' 'In addition,' 'As you know,' and 'Firstly' are used to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally slightly mechanical, and some transitions could be more sophisticated. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different points requested in the prompt. The overall progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is generally appropriate for a formal business letter. The student uses terms like 'concerned person,' 'portraying,' and 'amendments' effectively. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in collocation, such as 'deal them nicely' (should be 'treat them well') and 'would be helping towards others' (should be 'would be helpful to others'). While the range is sufficient to convey the message clearly, it lacks the more precise or sophisticated vocabulary that would characterize a higher band score. The spelling is accurate throughout the text.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as missing spaces after punctuation (e.g., 'well.I', 'area. They'), and minor errors in article usage and preposition choice (e.g., 'at the reception area' vs 'in the reception area'). The sentence 'She behaves good only with the people' contains an error in adverb usage ('well' instead of 'good'). Despite these errors, the grammar does not impede communication, and the structure of the letter is sound.
