Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Manager,
I am writing in reponse to your request about the suggestion on how to improve the functionality of the reception area following the complaints received from visitors.
I know most of the complaint our company received is related to long waiting time during busy hours and lack of guidance from receptionists. Moreover, the reception table is not well-organized and untidy all the time as per visitor observation.
The reception area is most important area, whereas it provides first impression of our company image and welcoming staff at front desk make a positive professionalism towards a client.
However, seating area need to be renovate with new design for attraction and replace more comfortable seats with facilities like water for drinking so that visitor can feel more welcoming, can contibute towards positive experience. Also, more sign need to organize to guide visitors with direction so that staff have less work to do.
I hope you will considering my suggestion positively.
Kind Regards,
Prarthana Patil

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have addressed all three bullet points of the prompt: describing the complaints, explaining the importance of the reception area, and suggesting improvements. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, while you mention the 'long waiting time' and 'lack of guidance', these points could be expanded with more specific detail to fully satisfy the requirements of a higher band. The suggestions for improvement are relevant, but the explanation of why the reception area is important is slightly underdeveloped. Overall, the response covers the requirements well enough to be clear and purposeful.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, with each paragraph focusing on a specific part of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'However', and 'Also' to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions feel slightly abrupt. For instance, the transition between the importance of the reception area and the suggestions for improvement could be smoother. Additionally, the referencing is sometimes unclear, such as in the phrase 'more sign need to organize', where the connection to the previous context is slightly strained. Overall, the organization is clear and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'functionality', 'professionalism', and 'contribute'. There are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'make a positive professionalism' (should be 'project a professional image') and 'more sign need to organize' (should be 'more signage needs to be installed'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise word usage. You successfully convey your meaning, but the range is not yet broad or flexible enough to reach the higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('seating area need to be renovate', 'more sign need to organize') and missing articles ('is most important area'). There are also issues with word forms, such as 'renovate' instead of 'renovated'. While these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede the reader's understanding of your message. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy, particularly regarding pluralization and verb tenses.
