Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mr. Patel,
I writing to provide my suggestions about how the reception area of our office could be improved as we have been receiving numerous complaints from the visitors.
To begin with, many visitors complained that the seating area is very congested and also, the seats are not enough as it can only accommodate five people at a time. Many clients are unsatisfied with the air conditioner in the reception area because it is noisy and it makes them impatient while waiting.
This complaints are very embarrassing and we should try to resolve this issue as soon as possible because it is affecting the reputation of our company. For any company, reception area showcases the first impression and it should be very attractive so that clients feel comfortable dealing with the team members as well.
Let me suggest how it can be improved. Firstly, we should replace the sofa sets which is in the reception area with chairs because sofa sets occupy more space than chairs. Moreover, the air conditioner which is making noise should either be replaced for a new one or you should get it repaired.
I hope you will like my suggestions and make changes in the reception area accordingly!
Yours faithfully,
Alex White

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all three bullet points of the task effectively. You clearly described the complaints regarding congestion and the noisy air conditioner, explained the importance of the reception area as a 'first impression' for the company, and provided actionable suggestions for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. To reach a higher band, ensure that all parts of the prompt are given equal weight and consider adding slightly more detail to the proposed solutions to demonstrate a more sophisticated approach to problem-solving.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use transition signals such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', and 'Firstly' to guide the reader through your arguments. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different points of the task. However, some cohesive devices are slightly repetitive or mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking phrases and ensure that referencing (e.g., 'this complaints') is grammatically accurate to maintain a smoother flow between sentences.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'accommodate', 'unsatisfied', 'reputation', and 'showcases'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it is somewhat functional rather than sophisticated. There are minor errors in word choice, such as 'This complaints' (should be 'These complaints') and 'replaced for a new one' (should be 'replaced with a new one'). To achieve a higher score, aim to incorporate more precise collocations and less common lexical items to demonstrate a wider range of expression.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'I writing' (should be 'I am writing'), 'the seats are not enough' (should be 'there are not enough seats'), and 'sofa sets which is' (should be 'sofa sets which are'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent verb tense usage. Proofreading for small errors like missing articles or incorrect pluralization will significantly enhance your accuracy.
