Dear ................. ,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mr. Thomas
From last few weeks our company has been receiving many complaints about our reception department. I am writing this letter to put your attention on these complaints and get some solutions to improve complaints.
One of the most common objection we are facing is about reception services. Visitors are not satisfied with the way of service that reception holder is providing to outsiders. Additionally, another complaint is about our reception location. Customers sometimes found difficulty in reaching our reception area.
Reception is very crucial as it is the main area from which visitors get a path for their next service. They do not know from where they can get their work done and which documents they are required for that work.
Considering all the facts about reception, it would be progressive for our company if these problems can be handled. First of all reception employees should be trained properly so that they can coordinate with their customer quite professionally and friendly. Secondly, reception should be moved to the ground floor.
I look forward to hearing from you
Yours faithfully,
Navjot Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers all three bullet points of the prompt: describing complaints, explaining the importance of the reception, and suggesting improvements. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the explanation of why the reception is important is brief and could be expanded with more specific details regarding company image or efficiency. The suggestions for improvement are clear but lack depth. To reach a higher band, you should provide more detailed justifications for your suggestions, such as how moving the reception would specifically reduce visitor confusion.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each addressing a specific part of the task. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Additionally', 'First of all', and 'Secondly', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the use of referencing could be more varied. The opening and closing are standard and appropriate for a formal letter. Overall, the structure is coherent, and the paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different points of the letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your points clearly. You use some relevant business-related terms like 'coordinate', 'professionally', and 'progressive'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'reception holder' (instead of 'receptionist') and 'way of service' (instead of 'quality of service'). There is also a slight repetition of the word 'reception'. To improve, try to use more precise synonyms and collocations to demonstrate a wider range of vocabulary and a more natural, sophisticated tone.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'From last few weeks' (should be 'For the last few weeks'), 'put your attention on' (should be 'draw your attention to'), and 'which documents they are required for that work' (should be 'which documents are required'). These errors are frequent but do not impede communication. To achieve a higher score, focus on subject-verb agreement, correct preposition usage, and ensuring that complex sentence structures are constructed accurately.
