Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Kulveer,
I am writing this letter to suggest some solutions about recent complaints about our company's reception area.
Yesterday, I saw some clients were talking to receptionist that our reception area is hard to find because we do not have any reception sign. Moreover, our reception desk is too small to find, people get confused.
My friend visited me yesterday, she said when she arrived at reception nobody was there because receptionist was on break.
The reception area is important for every company because it is the first thing that show our company's standard and make first impression on the clients.
In my suggestion, we should make our reception area spacious as well as clean. The desk is also need to replace with bigger one. Furthermore, our company should hire more receptionist to attend visitors. Right now we have only one receptionist who needs to breaks during her shift, during that time nobody is on reception to attend people.
So these are some things, that I think we need improve in our reception area.
Kind Regards

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed all three bullet points of the prompt: describing the complaints, explaining the importance of the reception area, and suggesting improvements. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a manager. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For example, when discussing the complaints, you mention that the area is 'hard to find' and the desk is 'too small', but these points could be expanded with more professional detail to better reflect a workplace context. To improve, ensure that your suggestions are linked more explicitly to the problems identified, providing a more cohesive plan for your manager to consider.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the problem to the importance and finally to the solutions. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'In my suggestion', which help guide the reader. However, the paragraphing is quite limited; the entire body of the letter is essentially one large block of text. Breaking this into distinct paragraphs—one for the problems, one for the importance, and one for the solutions—would significantly improve the structure and readability of your response, aligning it more closely with the requirements for a higher band score.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You use a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your ideas clearly, such as 'spacious', 'confused', and 'standard'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For instance, you write 'talking to receptionist' (missing an article) and 'needs to breaks' (incorrect verb form). Additionally, some phrasing is slightly repetitive, such as using 'reception area' and 'receptionist' multiple times in close proximity. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more varied synonyms and ensure that your word choices are precise and grammatically integrated into your sentences.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is generally effective for this task. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that, while not impeding communication, are noticeable. Examples include 'the receptionist was on break' (should be 'on a break'), 'the desk is also need to replace' (should be 'needs to be replaced'), and 'during that time nobody is on reception' (should be 'at the reception'). These errors indicate a need for more careful proofreading, particularly regarding subject-verb agreement, article usage, and passive voice construction.
