Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
I am writing this letter about couple bad reviews about information desk area . These reviews are given by customers .
Firstly , in winter season there is lack of heating , this complaint is on number one as we know in cold months outside temperature remain low . When people come to this area they feel cold because they directly come from car heat . Secondly , lack of sitting area . In busy season numbers of visitors increase as compare to slow days . That time people have to wait long time .
Entrance is play vital role in any company . These days mostly folks judge book by cover due to lack time . If the entry gate will beautiful it can boost the sale of company .
We have to expand reception area . We can order comfortable sofa for sitting area . Moreover , we can start free coffee and some snacks . If will helpful is there will long waiting time , this idea can keep them busy .
Yours Faithfully ,
Arjan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt: describing complaints, explaining the importance of the reception, and suggesting improvements. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented. However, the development of these points is somewhat basic. For instance, the explanation of why the reception is important relies on a cliché ('judge book by cover') and could be more professionally articulated. While the response is functional and addresses the task requirements, it lacks the depth of development and professional tone expected for higher bands. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a manager, though it leans slightly informal in places.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Moreover' helps to guide the reader through the text. However, the flow is occasionally interrupted by awkward phrasing and punctuation errors, such as the spacing before commas. The referencing is sometimes a bit mechanical, and the transition between the importance of the reception and the suggested improvements could be smoother. Overall, the information is arranged coherently, but the management of cohesion is not yet flexible or sophisticated.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There are several instances of awkward phrasing, such as 'couple bad reviews' (should be 'a couple of') and 'outside temperature remain low'. The phrase 'judge book by cover' is a common idiom but is used slightly incorrectly in this context. While the student attempts to use some topic-specific vocabulary like 'reception area' and 'visitors', the range is limited. More precise collocations and a wider range of professional vocabulary would be needed to reach a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the' is often missing, e.g., 'in winter season'), subject-verb agreement ('numbers of visitors increase as compare to'), and sentence construction ('If will helpful is there will long waiting time'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with unnecessary spaces before commas. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to be noticeable and demonstrate a lack of control over complex structures.
