Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Manager,
I am writing to inform you of the multiple complaints about the reception area, and suggest how this area can be improved. Initially, I would like to describe the complaints that we have received. Most of them complained about the location of the reception table, which is not in the main entrance hall instead it is placed in a separate room. That is really inconvenient for the guest to locate. Secondly, few of them also complained about the lack of markings and tags to guide the visitors.
Similarly, I would like to emphasize the importance of a central reception area for a business company. It would give an opportunity to every visitor to get basic information and background checks of a company. In addition to that I would also play a significant role in solving minor issues which can be solved at that moment by a service provider.
Therefore, I would suggest that we should place our reception desk in the main hall, just next to the gate. This way, it would be not only easily accessible for everyone but at the same time would help the visitors to navigate the location, they want to go.
I am looking forward to a positive response from you, and would appreciate it if you take necessary actions as soon as possible.
Yours sincerely,
Ayaz

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly described the complaints regarding the reception's location and lack of signage, explained the importance of the area for visitor experience and issue resolution, and provided a logical suggestion for relocation. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, ensuring the reader understands the situation and your proposed solution. To reach a higher band, ensure that your opening and closing are slightly more professional, perhaps by addressing the manager by name if possible, though the current structure is acceptable for the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific requirement of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use transition signals such as 'Initially', 'Secondly', 'Similarly', and 'Therefore' to connect your thoughts. While these are effective, some of the transitions are slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your cohesive devices and ensure that the flow between sentences feels more natural. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall clarity of the message.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'inconvenient', 'emphasize', 'accessible', and 'navigate' correctly. There are a few minor issues with collocation, such as 'business company' (which is redundant) and 'background checks of a company' (which might be better phrased as 'company information'). However, these do not impede communication. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more precise collocations and less common vocabulary to show greater flexibility in your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are clear and error-free. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as 'it is placed in a separate room' (which could be 'it is located') and 'help the visitors to navigate the location, they want to go' (which needs a relative pronoun like 'where'). Despite these small errors, your control of grammar is generally good, and your punctuation is accurate throughout the letter. The errors present do not cause any difficulty for the reader.
