Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing this letter to express my concern about the complaints about the reception area of our company.
There are numerous concerns about the reception area. The predominant one is that there is no proper seating area for the visitors. Secondly, sometimes the restrooms are also not properly maintained. Moreover, some individuals also bring attention about the air conditioning in the respective area, and so on.
As you know, this area is quite important for us; we use it during any event, as well as most of the employees like to sit there during lunchtime. So, organizing it in a proper way is necessary for us.
However, I just want to give some recommendations on some areas where we need more attention. Firstly, we need to hire a regular maintenance team so that the washrooms are clean on a daily basis. Also, we need some chairs and tables so that workers enjoy in better way. More importantly, the air conditioner need to be changed as soon as possible because of summer.
I hope you will look up at these areas.
Yours faithfully,
Gurleen Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: describing complaints, explaining the importance of the reception area, and suggesting improvements. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of why the area is important focuses more on employee lunchtime use rather than the professional impression it makes on visitors, which is the primary purpose of a reception. While the task is fulfilled, the ideas could be expanded with more specific detail to reach a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different requirements of the task. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'Moreover', and 'However' are used to guide the reader through the points. While the flow is generally good, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing in the second paragraph ('the respective area') is a bit awkward. Overall, the information is presented in a coherent manner that is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their message clearly. There are some attempts at more formal language, such as 'predominant' and 'recommendations'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'bring attention about' instead of 'raise concerns regarding' and 'enjoy in better way'. The vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the intended meaning, but it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher band scores.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The letter uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'the air conditioner need to be changed' (subject-verb agreement) and 'look up at these areas' (incorrect phrasal verb usage). Punctuation is generally accurate, but the sentence structure is occasionally repetitive. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, the student should focus on subject-verb agreement and more varied sentence construction.
