Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing to discuss regrading recent complaints that we received from our clients regarding reception area. As it a prime area where our visitors visits on daily bases, this matter needs your immediate attention.
To being with, there are certain factors that we got complains about and seating arrangement is one of them. Due to uncomfortable chairs, clients do find it very difficult to wait there. In addition, according to some visitors, reception area always has a very unpleasant odour.
Reception area is a place which comes right after the entrance of our company. Therefore, it can create a first impression of our company in clients mind. Furthermore, many reputed clients have to wait longer for a meeting in this area which makes it very important place.
To resolve this issue, I would suggest to buy some new couches to be replaced it with old chairs. Also, room fresheners of topical scent will not only eliminate odour but it will also make the air fresh.
Yours faithfully,'

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly describe the complaints regarding seating and odor, explain the importance of the reception area as a 'first impression' point, and provide actionable suggestions for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for instance, you could elaborate on how the new furniture would specifically improve the client experience beyond just replacing old chairs. Overall, the task is fully addressed with a clear purpose throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use some cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'In addition', 'Therefore', and 'Furthermore' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or slightly misused, such as 'To being with' (a grammatical error) and the transition between the importance of the area and the suggestions could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow, which is a key strength of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'prime area', 'unpleasant odour', and 'reputed clients'. However, there are some noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'regrading' instead of 'regarding', 'visits on daily bases' (should be 'visits on a daily basis'), and 'topical scent' (which is likely a misuse of 'tropical' or 'pleasant'). While these errors do not impede communication, they limit the precision of your writing. Expanding your vocabulary to include more natural collocations would improve your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'As it a prime area' (missing 'is'), 'visitors visits' (subject-verb agreement), 'clients mind' (missing possessive apostrophe), and 'replaced it with' (unnecessary 'it'). While these errors are frequent, they rarely cause confusion for the reader. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and article usage. Increasing the variety of error-free complex sentences will help you move toward a higher band.
