Student answer (Band 8.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing in response to your request for suggestions that, in my opinion, could improve the reception services for our customers.
Currently, the reception area has limited seating, which means that customers often have to stand and wait while receptionists assist other people. This can make them feel uncomfortable and may lead to complaints. Moreover, customers can become bored during long waiting periods as there is nothing available to keep them occupied or entertained.
The reception area is a vital part of an organisation because it creates the first impression and influences how clients perceive the company. Therefore, it should be clean, comfortable and welcoming, while also reflecting the professionalism of the organisation. Improving this area could enhance customer satisfaction and contribute to the company's overall reputation.
To address these issues, I would suggest installing additional sofas or comfortable chairs so that customers can wait comfortably. In addition, providing magazines, a television showing the news, or low-volume background music could keep customers entertained and make their waiting time more pleasant.
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to share my suggestions. I hope you will take them into consideration.
Kind regards,
Parminder Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have fully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly described the complaints regarding limited seating and boredom, explained the importance of the reception area as a 'first impression' for the company, and provided practical, relevant suggestions for improvement. The tone is professional and appropriate for a letter to a manager. The ideas are well-developed and logically presented, ensuring the reader understands both the problem and the proposed solutions. You have maintained a consistent focus throughout the letter, meeting all requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is well-organized with a clear logical progression. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which aids readability. You have used a range of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Moreover', 'Therefore', and 'In addition', to link your ideas smoothly. The paragraphing is logical and contributes to the overall coherence of the response. The introduction and conclusion are appropriate for the format, and the flow of information from the problem to the solution is seamless and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You have used a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for a formal business context. Phrases such as 'influence how clients perceive the company', 'contribute to the company's overall reputation', and 'take them into consideration' demonstrate a strong command of language. The vocabulary is precise and used accurately throughout the text. While the range is sufficient and effective, incorporating a few more sophisticated or less common collocations could elevate the response further, but the current level is already very strong and natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
Your writing displays a high level of grammatical accuracy. You have successfully used a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional 'if' or relative clauses, without making errors. Punctuation is used correctly, and there are no slips that impede communication. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and the control over verb tenses and subject-verb agreement is consistent. The writing is fluent and demonstrates a solid grasp of English grammar suitable for professional correspondence.
