Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear James,

I am writing to give you suggestion about an improvement of reception area.

There have been several complaints made about entry area of hotel such as long lines during peak hours, slow administrative processes, understaffing and handling complaint poorly.

The reception area serves as the primary operational hub. It dictates a guest's impression within seconds and directly impacts both business revenue and guest satisfaction. Apart from this, Arriving after long travel can be stressful. An efficient, empathetic reception process quickly shifts the guest from a state of travel fatigue to relaxation.

There are numerous things which can be added to make perfect reception area. Firstly, hotel should upgrade admission process of guest software that can finish procedure in seconds. Moreover, there should be Whatsapp Group for team member of hotel, in which all the customer complaints should be resolved in shorter time. Furthermore, team members should follow guest greeting rule all the time.

I hope these ideas can help you to make improvement in our hotel's reception area.

Yours sincerely,

Tez

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt effectively. You clearly describe the complaints, explain the importance of the reception area, and provide specific suggestions for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a professional letter to a manager. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for instance, while you mention 'understaffing', you could briefly explain how this specifically impacts the guest experience. Overall, the response is well-focused and fulfills the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use transition signals such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore' to connect your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your cohesive devices and ensure that the flow between sentences is more natural. For example, the transition between the importance of the reception and the suggested improvements could be smoother to enhance the overall progression of the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'operational hub', 'administrative processes', and 'empathetic'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'give you suggestion' (should be 'give you a suggestion') and 'make perfect reception area' (should be 'make the reception area perfect'). While you attempt to use more sophisticated vocabulary, some collocations are slightly unnatural. Focusing on more precise word choices and articles will help you achieve a higher score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, particularly with article usage ('the' is missing before 'reception area' or 'entry area' in several places) and pluralization ('Whatsapp Group' should be 'a WhatsApp group'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures while maintaining accuracy will help you move toward a higher band.
