Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear sir,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter regarding suggestions that how our company’s reception area improved.

We received several complaints about it from customers, most of them have same concern and that is about less number of computers and receptionists. People have to wait longer than expected and some of them left without being attended. As you know, first impression is the last impression, and our first impression for customers is reception desk. We need some more devices and employees by which we can effectively achieve our targets. We can also organize that area by which it looks clean and organized. Our customers will definitely come back when they feel heard and respected without any waiting period. It helps our business to grow efficiently and effectively.

I hope you will like my suggestion and let me know what do you think about it.

Thank you

Yours sincerely

Sukhpreet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points: describing complaints, explaining the importance of the reception, and suggesting improvements. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the suggestion to 'organize that area' is vague and lacks specific detail. While the tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager, the response would benefit from more concrete examples of how to improve the space, such as specific furniture or layout changes, to better demonstrate a full development of ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into a logical structure with a clear opening and closing. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. Transitions between sentences are occasionally abrupt, such as the jump from discussing the receptionists to the 'first impression' concept. Paragraphing is also insufficient; the entire body of the letter is contained in a single paragraph, which makes the flow of ideas less distinct. Using more varied linking words would improve the overall progression of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. Phrases like 'less number of' and 'some more devices' are functional but basic. There are some minor collocation issues, such as 'achieve our targets' in the context of a reception area, which sounds slightly unnatural. To reach a higher band, you should aim to incorporate more sophisticated vocabulary related to business environments and professional communication, moving beyond simple descriptive terms to more precise professional terminology.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'suggestions that how our company’s reception area improved' (missing auxiliary verb and incorrect clause structure) and 'most of them have same concern' (missing article). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles would significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
