Dear ................. ,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mr. Patel,
I am writing to provide suggestion on how could we improve our reception area. The main complaints we received were about siting capacity and poor quality of cleanliness.
Firstly, we have our business across the world. Our clients are from different part of worlds, and having a clean reception area shows strong initial impression. The reception area is the face of our business and attracts customers and clients.
Secondly, I believe we should add more sofa and chairs in the reception area, so everyone can wait comfortably. While the walls and doors has dust around them, this problem could be solved by having a cleaner everyday. The cleaner’s main responsibility would be to keep the place clean and help the clients. I suggest having a coffee machine is beneficial too.
I would therefore request you to order new sofa and chairs at your earliest convenience. Should you require any further information, I have enclosed few options to consider and would be very happy to assist further.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,
Neel Desai.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You described the complaints regarding seating and cleanliness, explained the importance of the reception area as the 'face of the business,' and provided specific suggestions for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a professional letter to a manager. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are fully developed; for example, you could have elaborated slightly more on how a coffee machine would specifically improve the client experience. Overall, the response is clear, relevant, and meets all task requirements effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. You use transition signals such as 'Firstly,' 'Secondly,' and 'I would therefore' to guide the reader through your points. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different aspects of your request. While the flow is generally good, some cohesive devices are slightly repetitive or mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking phrases and ensure that referencing (e.g., 'this problem') is always crystal clear to the reader. The overall structure is sound and supports the message well.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'at your earliest convenience' and 'initial impression' effectively. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'siting capacity' (should be 'seating capacity') and 'different part of worlds' (should be 'different parts of the world'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your writing. To achieve a higher score, focus on using more natural collocations and ensuring that pluralization and word forms are consistently accurate throughout your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'provide suggestion' (should be 'provide suggestions'), 'walls and doors has dust' (should be 'have dust'), and 'enclosed few options' (should be 'enclosed a few options'). These errors are noticeable but do not cause confusion for the reader. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and the use of articles ('a', 'the'). Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences will help you move into the higher band categories.
