Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to provide you a few suggestions from my end in order to improve our reception area.
Recently there have been a number of complaints made regarding the reception area by our visitor. One of the most common disputes that arose was about the hygiene while entering the building. The second complaint was that the receptionist is always on her phone and not attentive to the customer's needs.
Moreover, I believe the reception area is the first thing a visitor notices when they enter. I do think we should hire new people for the cleaning services while putting up a chart with the daily updates on what part of the building they cleaned. Lastly, we must put up a job vacancy for our new receptionist position since the current receptionist had already been served three warnings in the past regarding the usage of cell phone during office hours.
Thank you so much for considering my suggestions and making a better change for our company.
Yours Sincerely,
Srishti Narang

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You described the complaints regarding hygiene and staff behavior, explained the importance of the reception area as a first impression, and provided actionable suggestions for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the 'why' regarding the importance of the reception area, perhaps by mentioning how it reflects the company's professional image or impacts client retention, which would further develop your ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use transition signals such as 'Moreover', 'The second complaint', and 'Lastly' to guide the reader through your points. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the problem from the proposed solutions. The flow is smooth, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. To improve, ensure that referencing is always precise; for example, 'the receptionist' is clear, but ensure that pronouns consistently link back to their intended antecedents throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your ideas clearly. Phrases like 'attentive to the customer's needs' and 'considering my suggestions' are natural and appropriate. There are some minor word choice issues, such as using 'disputes' when 'complaints' or 'issues' would be more accurate in this context. You also use 'put up a job vacancy', which is slightly unnatural; 'advertise a vacancy' would be more standard. Expanding your range to include more precise business-related collocations would help elevate your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most sentences are clear and error-free. However, there are some grammatical slips, such as 'provide you a few suggestions' (should be 'provide you with') and 'the current receptionist had already been served' (the past perfect is unnecessary here; 'has already received' would be better). Additionally, 'by our visitor' should be plural ('visitors'). Despite these minor errors, your meaning is never obscured, and you show good control over sentence construction.
