Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
i am writing this to share critical suggestions regarding improvement of our office's reception area.
We have received many complaints from various peoples including our clients and visitors, regarding unorganized condition of our company's reception. All complaints are very valid such as less staff, poor lighting and AC cooling problem in waiting area.
We all know importance of good and clean reception area because it gives company's first impression for visitors and we all know that first impression is the last impression, so we must focus on that. By improving visitor's area we can make our customers experience valuable.
We should arrange advance facilities and good staff for our visitors, so they can make very comfortable in our company. Also, we can add some attractive lights in center area and fix problems related to cooling and lighting.
I really hope that my suggestion will be of help.
Sincerely,
K.R.PATEL

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: describing the complaints, explaining the importance of the reception area, and suggesting improvements. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a manager. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the suggestions for improvement, such as 'arrange advance facilities' and 'add some attractive lights', are quite vague. To reach a higher band, you should provide more specific details or examples of what these 'facilities' might entail. The purpose of the letter is clear, and the response successfully covers the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose. There is a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. You use some basic cohesive devices, such as 'also' and 'so', to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical, and the use of cohesive devices could be more varied and sophisticated. For instance, the transition between the importance of the reception and the suggested improvements could be smoother. Overall, the message is easy to follow, and the paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. You rely on some repetitive phrasing, such as 'reception area' and 'complaints'. There are also some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'unorganized condition' (should be 'disorganized state') and 'peoples' (should be 'people'). While the meaning is always clear, the range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, preventing a higher score. To improve, try to incorporate more specific professional terminology related to office management and customer service.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('importance of good and clean reception area'), incorrect pluralization ('peoples'), and minor punctuation issues. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher band. You should focus on mastering the use of articles and ensuring subject-verb agreement. The sentence structure is generally functional, but increasing the variety of complex sentences would help demonstrate a wider range of grammatical control.
