Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to mention some suggestions for an improvement regarding reception area of the company.

Firstly, I would like to discuss a plenty of complaints about the service of the front desk. There are several things such as no greetings, arrogant response and poor guidance. These would definetly make a significant impact on company's buissness.

Apart from that, reception make an huge difference on many things like build relations with customer and represent organization on a front foot. They are the first person to greet our visitors.

Lastly, I would like to give some tips for a betterment in that particular thing. Managemnt should hire extrovert person for a reception area so that person could help better in certain ways. Also we could develop an app for quick services.

Thank you so much for considering suggestions from my side. I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Yash

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt: describing complaints, explaining the importance of the reception area, and suggesting improvements. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the suggestions for improvement—hiring an 'extrovert person' and developing an app—are mentioned briefly without much elaboration on how these would specifically resolve the identified complaints. To reach a higher band, you should expand on your ideas by providing more detail or examples, ensuring the response feels fully developed rather than just a list of points.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each addressing a specific part of the prompt. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Apart from that', and 'Lastly' to guide the reader through your points. While the progression is clear, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical. Additionally, there are some minor issues with referencing; for example, in the phrase 'that particular thing', the reference is vague and could be more precise. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that pronouns clearly refer back to their antecedents would enhance the flow of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'significant impact', 'betterment', and 'extrovert'. However, there are several spelling errors, such as 'definetly' (definitely), 'buissness' (business), and 'Managemnt' (management). Additionally, some word choices are slightly unnatural, such as 'a plenty of complaints' (which should be 'a number of complaints' or 'many complaints') and 'on a front foot' (which is an incorrect idiom in this context). To improve, focus on mastering the spelling of common business terms and pay closer attention to natural collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The letter uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text. For example, 'reception area of the company' is missing an article ('the'), and 'reception make an huge difference' contains a subject-verb agreement error ('reception makes') and an incorrect article ('a huge'). There are also issues with pluralization, such as 'extrovert person' (should be 'an extrovert person' or 'extrovert people'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on proofreading for articles, subject-verb agreement, and plural forms.
