Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
The purpose of my writing today is to provide you suggestion for improving the help desk area in our company.
To begin with, as the increasing number of complaints triggering the situations, I and thought it has to be addressed. These complaints are mainly because of absent staff coupled in addition to longer wait time of calls.
Therefore, I would like to mention that the discussed problem is for last 2 months, and it has to be resolved as soon as possible owing to that fact that we are a multi national company. Hence, it is deteriorating the image of our company. Moreover, if not addressed now, we may face a enormous loss in the future because not only customers are complaining about the issue, but our vendors also require to wait to get the confirmation of material delivered.
Owing to the aforementioned scenario, I would like to suggest that if we could hire more staff dedicated to the reception area only, it ought to help us in reduced calling lead time coupled with proper functioning of administrative tasks.
Overall, I am looking forward to seeing how my recommendation changed into prompt action from your side
Yours sincerely,
Shashank

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: describing the complaints, explaining the importance of the reception area, and suggesting improvements. Your tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, while you mention the importance of the reception area regarding the company's image, this could be expanded further to explain how it serves as the 'face' of the organization. The suggestions are relevant, but could be more detailed to show a deeper understanding of the problem. Overall, you have fulfilled the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organized logically, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use some cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Therefore', 'Moreover', and 'Owing to the aforementioned scenario' to link your ideas. However, some of these transitions feel slightly mechanical or forced. Additionally, the paragraphing is a bit thin; the letter could benefit from a more distinct separation between the description of the problem and the proposed solutions to improve the flow. Referencing is generally clear, but some sentences are slightly disjointed due to awkward phrasing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'multi national', 'deteriorating', and 'administrative tasks'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'triggering the situations' and 'coupled in addition to'. You also use 'enormous loss' and 'prompt action', which are good, but the overall lexical control is inconsistent. To reach a higher band, focus on using more natural collocations and avoiding repetitive or slightly misused phrases. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but lacks the precision required for a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. For example, 'I and thought it has to be addressed' contains a pronoun error and an unnecessary 'and'. The phrase 'the discussed problem is for last 2 months' is grammatically incorrect; it should be 'has been occurring for the last two months'. Additionally, 'my recommendation changed into prompt action' is tense-inconsistent. While these errors do not prevent the message from being understood, they occur frequently enough to limit your score in this criterion.
