Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter in response to your request for suggestions on how the reception area could be improved.
To begin with, our company has been facing the various complaints about the reception area. Many visitors claim that reception area is not easily reachable in our company. In addition, many individuals argue that there is not any direction board available to reach towards the reception area. Although reception staff is not always present on a desk to help visitors.
However, reception area is the essential part of a company. Because it is the first area where visitor will come to introduce. Furthermore, reception area plays an important role in development of the company.
Moreover, reception area should always easily visible so that visitor can easily reach there. The staff of the reception area should be kind, patient and helpful to the visitors. If the staff member have other responsibility to do then they should make sure there is always other person should available there to help people behalf of them as a proxy member.
It would be a pleasure to hear from you.
Yours faithfully,
Khushi Patel.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt: describing complaints, explaining the importance of the reception area, and suggesting improvements. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the suggestions for improvement are a bit repetitive, and the explanation of why the area is important could be more sophisticated. While the task is fully addressed, the depth of the response is consistent with a mid-range band, as the ideas are presented in a straightforward manner without significant extension or elaboration.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure of the request. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'In addition', 'However', and 'Moreover' are used to link ideas. However, some of these transitions feel slightly mechanical or forced. Additionally, there are some issues with referencing; for example, the sentence 'Although reception staff is not always present on a desk' is a fragment that lacks a clear connection to the previous thought. Overall, the progression of ideas is logical, but the flow could be improved with more varied and natural cohesive links.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the message to be conveyed clearly. There are some attempts at using topic-specific vocabulary like 'reception area', 'visitors', and 'proxy member'. However, the range is somewhat limited and repetitive, with the phrase 'reception area' appearing frequently. There are also minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'reach towards the reception area' (should be 'find the reception area') and 'on a desk' (should be 'at the desk'). A wider range of synonyms and more precise collocations would elevate the score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include 'facing the various complaints' (the article 'the' is unnecessary here), 'reception area is not easily reachable' (missing article 'the'), and 'If the staff member have other responsibility' (subject-verb agreement error: 'has' and 'responsibilities'). Additionally, the sentence starting with 'Although' is a dependent clause used as a complete sentence. These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding the intended message.
