Dear ................. ,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Manager,

I hope this letter finds you well. As you know, we have very limited space for the Reception area in our company. We are getting numerous complaints about our reception area like visitors has to stand so close to each other, waiting period is more than expected, no air-conditioner and water facilities, and mainly lack of sitting arrengments.

In every company, reception area plays vital role as a first impression. Whoever is coming like owner to any tyloon they have to go through reception area and I believe so in this summer season air-conditioner and water are basic nacecities.

For improvement, first we have to make sitting arrangments in one room and there we can provide water and snacks, some books to read while they are waiting. We can hire one more employee to assist them for where to go and sit.

These are my few suggetion, may be you would like to work on it.

Best Regards,

Raj

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points of the prompt: describing the complaints, explaining the importance of the reception area, and suggesting improvements. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a manager. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, while you mention that the reception area is important for a 'first impression,' this could be expanded further to explain how it affects the company's reputation or client retention. Similarly, the suggestions are brief. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is fully extended with more descriptive detail or logical reasoning.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific part of the prompt. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'For improvement' and 'first,' which help the reader follow your argument. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical, and the use of linking words could be more varied to improve the overall cohesion. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the letter follows a standard structure, which makes the information easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'numerous,' 'vital role,' and 'necessities.' However, there are several spelling errors, such as 'arrengments' (arrangements), 'tyloon' (tycoon), 'nacecities' (necessities), and 'suggetion' (suggestion). These errors are noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, focus on proofreading for common spelling mistakes and try to incorporate more precise collocations to enhance the professional tone of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'visitors has to stand' (should be 'have to'), 'waiting period is more than expected' (missing article 'the'), and 'whoever is coming like owner to any tyloon' (awkward phrasing). While these errors are frequent, they rarely impede communication. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures would also help elevate your score in this criterion.
