Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing regarding the suggestion you ask for to improve the reception area of our automobile company. At our car showroom more than 200 people visit for different purposes. Therefore I would like to share some idea which may improve the customer complaints.

Major complaints are about absence of receptionist most of the time due to which arrivals feels inconvinience. Also their are lack of space in waiting and because of it people have to stand at any corner.

This area is one of the most important because it replicates the image of organization. For instance, if proper treatment at the enterance is serve to customer they understand the professionalism that complany maintain.

To improve this area first thing to be done is to appoint one person who will be working at this place to answer customer's question. Secondly, more sofas and chair should be allocate at waiting area with one person who will serve water and coffee as per customer requirements.

Kind regards

Mohammed

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

Mohammed covers all bullet points required by the task prompt. He successfully describes the complaints, stating that 'absence of receptionist' leads to inconvenience and that there is a 'lack of space in waiting'. He also addresses why the reception area is important by explaining that 'it replicates the image of organization'. Furthermore, he suggests practical improvements, such as appointing a dedicated staff member and adding sofas. All parts of the prompt are addressed adequately, and the tone is appropriate for a letter to a manager. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and lacks elaboration. To reach a higher band, the points could be expanded with more detailed consequences or specific examples.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a clear logical organization with distinct paragraphs for each main point, moving from the introduction of the issue to the complaints, the importance of the area, and finally the suggestions. Cohesive devices such as 'Therefore', 'Also', 'For instance', and 'Secondly' are used to connect ideas, though some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive in structure. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different topics. Referencing is generally clear, and the overall progression of the text is easy to follow, supporting effective communication throughout the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a business-related task, including terms like 'automobile company', 'professionalism', and 'requirements'. However, there are notable word choice and spelling errors, such as 'inconvinience' instead of inconvenience, 'their are' instead of there is, 'enterance' instead of entrance, and 'serve' instead of served. Collocations are also sometimes awkward, as seen in 'proper treatment at the enterance is serve'. While these lexical inaccuracies and spelling errors are noticeable and detract from precision, they do not impede the overall communication of the message.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

Mohammed attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional ideas ('if proper treatment at the enterance is serve to customer they understand the professionalism') and subordinate clauses ('I am writing regarding the suggestion you ask for'). However, grammatical errors are frequent throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('their are lack of space'), incorrect verb forms ('is serve' instead of is served; 'should be allocate' instead of should be allocated), and missing articles. While these errors occur across various sentence types, the meaning remains comprehensible, placing the performance firmly within the Band 5.5 to 6.0 range.
