Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Paul,
I am writing to bring your attention to potential solutions that I propose for numerous complaints we have received regarding reception area. Complaints stated were associated with hygiene and coffee machine.
We are already familiar with how our truck drivers regularly access reception area for documents which also brings in dirt. Access to them cannot being denied for operational reasons. Furthermore, customers are complaining about broken coffee machine which I believe have reached end of its life span.
Reception area serves huge importance to our business which is why it need immidiate attention. To serve customers better, we must provide them with cleaner and friendly welcome by offering coffee. An viable solution is increased frequency of cleaning department to clean floor throughout the day. Meanwhile, an investment in new coffee machine would be easier fix then repairing old one.
I believe these suggestion would help to improve reception area immediatly thus, we can provide better customer service.
Yours faithfully,
Ranjot

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response covers all parts of the bullet points effectively. You described the complaints relating to hygiene caused by truck drivers and the broken coffee machine, explained the importance of the reception area as the face of the business, and suggested practical improvements such as increased cleaning frequency and investing in a new coffee machine. The tone of the letter is appropriate for a workplace communication, maintaining a polite yet direct approach. All three bullet points from the prompt are fully addressed with relevant details and clear development, aligning well with the Band 7 requirements for task achievement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, body paragraphs addressing specific prompts, and a concise sign-off. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas such as the nature of complaints, the importance of the area, and proposed solutions. However, there are occasional lapses in cohesion, such as missing articles ('reception area' instead of 'the reception area') and somewhat abrupt transitions between sentences in the second and third paragraphs. Despite these minor issues, the overall progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow, supporting a Band 6.5 or solid Band 6 performance.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a workplace letter, using terms such as 'operational reasons', 'investment', and 'customer service'. However, there are noticeable lexical and collocational errors throughout the text, such as 'access cannot being denied', 'have reached end of its life span' (missing article), and 'friendly welcome' where a noun phrase like 'a warm welcome' would be more natural. There are also missing prepositions and articles. While these errors do not impede communication, they restrict the lexical score to a Band 6.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
There is a mix of simple and complex sentence structures attempted, such as 'We are already familiar with how our truck drivers regularly access reception area...' and 'An viable solution is...'. Grammatical control is inconsistent. There are several clear errors, including 'cannot being denied' (incorrect verb form), 'machine which I believe have reached' (subject-verb agreement), 'immidiate attention' and 'immediatly' (spelling errors), and missing articles before singular countable nouns like 'reception area', 'viable solution', and 'new coffee machine'. Because these errors occur frequently throughout the text, the grammar profile fits the Band 5.5 descriptor.
