Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope you find this letter well. I am writing this letter to suggest some possible solutions to improve our company's reception area.

Our customers are complaining about the insufficient sitting arrangements and the air conditioning which does not work properly. When our business partners come along with their team members we do not have sufficient chairs to offer seats.

Undoubtedly, reception area leaves a lasting impression on the public about the company's standards and it should be well maintained at all times.

By adding more comfortable chairs in the sitting area, we can easily resolve the problem of sitting arrangements. Moreover, the air conditioner can be replaced with a new one and must have regular service in order to keep the place cool in summer.

By fixing these couple of problems we can reduce the level of complaints associated with front desk and this will represent our enterprise in a better way. I believe you will consider my suggestion.

Yours sincerely,

Suman

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all bullet points of the task prompt. Suman effectively describes the complaints regarding insufficient sitting arrangements and the malfunctioning air conditioning. The importance of the reception area is clearly stated, noting how it leaves a lasting impression on the public about company standards. Furthermore, practical suggestions are provided, including adding more comfortable chairs and replacing or regularly servicing the air conditioner. The tone is consistently appropriate for a workplace communication to a manager. Ideas are relevant and fully developed, meeting the requirements of a Band 7 performance where all parts are clearly addressed and supported.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter exhibits clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving smoothly from the opening purpose of the letter to the specific complaints, the importance of the area, the solutions, and finally a courteous sign-off. Cohesive devices are used effectively, such as 'Moreover' and 'By adding more comfortable chairs', helping to guide the reader seamlessly through the text. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, keeping related ideas together and ensuring the overall structure is coherent and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

Suman demonstrates an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using functional workplace terms such as 'insufficient sitting arrangements', 'business partners', and 'enterprise'. There are occasional slight awkwardness or minor collocation slips, such as the opening sentence 'I hope you find this letter well' instead of 'I hope this letter finds you well', and 'fixing these couple of problems' instead of 'a couple of problems'. However, these lexical choices do not impede communication, and the writer attempts some less common vocabulary with general success, placing this firmly in the Band 6.5 to 7 range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response features a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional and participial constructions like 'When our business partners come along with their team members we do not have sufficient chairs to offer seats' and 'By adding more comfortable chairs... we can easily resolve the problem'. Grammatical control is generally strong with many error-free sentences. Minor errors, such as a missing comma in complex sentences or slight phrasing issues, are infrequent and do not interfere with understanding. Punctuation and sentence boundary control are sound throughout.
