Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mr. Ali,

Hello Sir! I hope you are doing well. I am writing this to express my suggestion regarding the issue of reception area you highlighted in our last meeting.

I am completely aware of all the complaints that have been made in the recent days. However, the most common mistake is that there is not any proper sitting arrangement for visitors. There are only few chairs. So, people have to keep standing while waiting for hours. Adding to this, people have also complained about the rude behaviour of our new receptionist Mr. Aggarwal.

Furthermore, I believe reception area is the most important area for our company as every client or customer starts their journey with us through this area. Also there should be proper sitting arrangement with some books and magazines so that people can wait patiently for their turn. I believe this area marks our first impression in the visitor's mind so it should be impressive.

However, here are some suggestions from my side -

~Proper furniture with comfortable seating arrangements.

~availability of reading materials like books or

magazines for visitors.

~a helper who could serve some drinks or

snacks for the clients.

~a proper impartial token system on

first come, first serve basis.

I hope you will find these suggestions

useful. Please let me know if you need

any kind of further help from my

side.

Thank you for time and assistance.

Yours sincerely,

Kunwar

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The student has successfully covered all parts of the task. In the letter, the writer describes the complaints made regarding the lack of seating and the receptionist's rude behaviour. The importance of the reception area is clearly articulated, noting that it forms the first impression for clients. Furthermore, several actionable suggestions are provided to improve the area, including furniture, reading materials, refreshments, and a token system. The tone is generally appropriate for a semi-formal workplace letter, although the opening 'Hello Sir!' is slightly too informal. Overall, the requirements of the task have been met well, corresponding to a solid Band 7.0 performance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter exhibits a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The student uses appropriate paragraphing to separate different parts of the letter, such as the introduction, complaints, importance, and suggestions. Cohesive devices are employed reasonably well, with transition words like 'However', 'Furthermore', and 'Also' used to connect ideas. However, the use of bullet points for the suggestions disrupts the natural flow of prose slightly, though it remains readable and easy to follow. Referencing is generally clear, and the overall progression guides the reader smoothly from the initial problem to the proposed solutions. This aligns well with the Band 7.0 descriptors.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, with some attempts at less common items such as 'impartial', 'arrangements', and 'impression'. Phrases like 'starts their journey with us' and 'patiently for their turn' are used naturally and effectively. There are a few minor lexical inaccuracies or awkward collocations, such as 'in the recent days' (instead of 'in recent days') and 'availability of reading materials'. Nevertheless, the vocabulary is adequate to convey precise meaning without impeding communication, representing a standard Band 6.5 to 7.0 performance, comfortably rounded to 6.5 due to occasional minor slips in word choice.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating relative clauses ('where visitors to your company arrive') and conditional or causal links ('so that people can wait patiently'). There are several error-free sentences, demonstrating good control over basic grammar. However, a few minor grammatical errors persist, such as the missing article in 'reception area is the most important area' and 'There are only few chairs' (should be 'only a few chairs'). Punctuation and capitalization are generally handled well, though the use of a tilde symbol in the bulleted list is overly informal for a business letter. This corresponds to a Band 6.5 descriptor profile.
