Student answer (Band 8.0)
Dear Manager,
I am writing to suggest some improvements to the reception area, following several complaints from visitors.
Recently, a number of visitors have complained that the reception area is often untidy and crowded. Some people have also mentioned that there are not enough comfortable chairs, and the waiting area can become noisy when several visitors arrive at the same time. In addition, the reception desk is sometimes unattended, which causes visitors to wait for assistance.
The reception area is particularly important because it is the first place visitors see when they arrive at our company. A clean, comfortable and well-organised reception area would create a positive first impression and make visitors feel welcome and respected. It would also reflect the professionalism of our company.
I would suggest providing more comfortable seating and keeping the area clean and organised throughout the day. We could also place some plants and up-to-date company information in the reception area to make it more attractive. Finally, having a receptionist available during busy hours would reduce waiting times and improve the overall experience for visitors.
I hope you will consider these suggestions. I believe these changes would make the reception area more welcoming and professional.
Yours sincerely,
Harbhagwan Singh

The response fully and effectively addresses all bullet points of the task prompt. You successfully describe the complaints that have been made, such as visitors noting that the area is untidy, crowded, noisy, and occasionally unattended. You also clearly explain why the reception area is important by highlighting its role in creating a positive first impression and reflecting company professionalism. Furthermore, you provide practical and relevant suggestions for improvement, including better seating, cleanliness, plants, company information, and dedicated staffing during busy hours. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager, and the ideas are well-developed throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter exhibits a clear logical progression from introducing the purpose of the email, detailing complaints, explaining importance, offering solutions, to a polite conclusion. Paragraphing is used extremely well, with each paragraph dedicated to a distinct aspect of the prompt. Cohesive devices such as "Recently", "Some people have also mentioned", "In addition", and "Finally" are used naturally and accurately to guide the reader smoothly through the text without feeling mechanical or obtrusive. Referencing between sentences is clear and precise.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The vocabulary used is natural, precise, and appropriate for a workplace communication task. You employ a sufficient and flexible range of vocabulary, including terms like "untidy and crowded", "professionalism", "attractive", and "overall experience". Word choice and collocations are accurate throughout. While the vocabulary is not excessively complex, it successfully fulfills the requirements of the task with precision and good control. There are no spelling or word choice errors that impede understanding.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
