Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Manager,
I hope this email finds you well. I would like to thank you first for giving me the opportunity to suggest some majors to improve reception area.
On last conference meeting event. I have noticed significant number of complaints regarding the reception area. Firstly, I would like mention guest were not thrilled with the seating arrangement in waiting area due to crowd and less chairs. Also, visitors were dissapointed by the rude behaviour by the receptionist who was on duty. Guests were not able to find the directions sign anywhere to locate the conference room and restrooms.
From my perspective, Reception area is the main point in every company where most of the client visit everyday. It should be more spacious in terms of seating arrangements and by providing training to staff could also enhance the quality of receptionist position. Apart from this proper direction signs and layout maps will also work great to eliminate confusions about certain areas in the building.
I hope my suggestions will helps you to decide future changes.
Kind regards,
Ram

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all the bullet points outlined in the task prompt. Ram effectively describes the complaints made regarding the crowded seating, rude receptionist, and missing directional signs. Furthermore, he explains why the reception area is important, noting that it is the main focal point where clients visit every day, and offers constructive suggestions for improvement such as enlarging the seating area, providing staff training, and adding clear layout maps. The tone is appropriate for a workplace letter to a manager. Although the ideas are straightforward and could be slightly more fully developed to reach the highest bands, all requirements of the task are adequately met, demonstrating a clear understanding of the prompt's communicative goals.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter maintains a clear and logical overall arrangement with a recognizable paragraph structure separating the introduction, complaints, importance, suggestions, and conclusion. Ram uses basic cohesive devices appropriately, such as 'Firstly', 'Also', and 'Apart from this', which help guide the reader through the points. However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes a bit mechanical, and paragraphing could be better managed, as the second paragraph compresses multiple distinct ideas (complaints) that might be clearer if separated. Overall, the organization is coherent and progression is logical throughout, supporting effective communication of the message.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student displays an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common phrases such as 'significant number of complaints', 'seating arrangement', and 'eliminate confusions'. However, there are noticeable word choice and spelling errors, such as 'majors' instead of 'measures', 'dissapointed' instead of 'disappointed', and the missing article in 'reception area is the main point'. Vocabulary control fluctuates between appropriate everyday terms and awkward collocations like 'conference meeting event'. Nonetheless, the lexical range is sufficient to convey the intended meaning without severely impeding the reader's understanding.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
Ram attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over grammar with structures like 'I would like to thank you first for giving me the opportunity' and 'Guests were not able to find the directions sign anywhere'. However, frequent grammatical inaccuracies persist, including missing articles ('reception area', 'waiting area', 'directions sign'), preposition errors ('on last conference meeting event'), and a subject-verb agreement slip in 'I hope my suggestions will helps'. Punctuation is also occasionally faulty, such as breaking a sentence incorrectly with a full stop before 'On last conference meeting event'. These errors occur regularly but rarely impede overall communication.
