Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mr Smith,
I am writting regarding the complaints about our reception area and to suggest some improvements that could make it more welcoming for visitors.
Several visitors have complained that there are not enough seats, especially during busy periods. Some guests have also mentioned long waiting times and the lack of clear signs showing where different deparments are located.
The reception area is important because it is the first place visitors see when they enter our company. A clean, comfortable and organised reception creates a postive first impression and reflects the professional image of our business.
I suggest adding more comfortable chairs and installing clear signs to direct visitors. Providing a water dispenser and magazines would also make waiting more pleasant.
In addition, having another receptionist available duringh busy periods could reduce waiting times and improve customer service.
I hope you will consider these suggestions.
Your sincerely,
Tanveer singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully covered all three parts of the prompt in a clear and appropriate manner. In your second paragraph, you clearly describe the complaints regarding the lack of seating, long waiting times, and unclear signage. Your third paragraph effectively explains the importance of the reception area, noting that it establishes a positive first impression and reflects the business's professional image. Finally, in the fourth and fifth paragraphs, you offer practical and relevant suggestions for improvement, such as adding comfortable chairs, a water dispenser, directional signs, and an additional receptionist. Your tone is polite, professional, and entirely suitable for a letter to a manager. All requirements of the task have been fully addressed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
Your letter is well-organized with a clear overall progression. You follow a logical sequence from stating the purpose of the letter, outlining the complaints, explaining the area's importance, and finally presenting your recommendations. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate each distinct idea, making the letter very easy to follow. You use basic cohesive devices effectively, such as 'especially during busy periods' and 'in addition,' to link your thoughts smoothly. Although cohesive devices are somewhat straightforward rather than sophisticated, they serve their purpose well and maintain a clear, logical flow throughout the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your ideas with precision and clarity. You successfully use less common business-related phrases such as 'professional image,' 'busy periods,' and 'customer service.' There are a few minor lexical and spelling errors present in your text, such as 'writting' instead of 'writing,' 'deparments' instead of 'departments,' and 'postive' instead of 'positive.' Additionally, 'duringh' contains a typographical error. Despite these occasional slips, your vocabulary is generally appropriate for a workplace communication task and does not impede overall understanding.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You demonstrate control over a mix of simple and complex sentence forms. For instance, you successfully construct a complex relative clause in 'the first place visitors see when they enter our company' and compound structures like 'providing a water dispenser and magazines would also make waiting more pleasant.' While you include several error-free sentences, there are a few mechanical and grammatical errors, notably spelling slips such as 'writting' and 'duringh,' alongside a minor capitalization error at the end ('Your sincerely'). However, these errors do not impede communication, and your overall control of basic sentence structures is solid.
