Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mr. Parker,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing this letter to regarding the reception area which neede to improvement.
There are several complaints have been made about the reception area. Customers say that there is only one person to handle the inquiries and they wait for a long time for their inquiries Also, there is no proper seating area, as a result customers face several issues related to seating arrangements.
Reception area is a very important because it is main part of our office as well as it creates a good image of our company. Mostly customer services are done by receptionist and it should be maintained properly.
According to my opinion, it would be better if you could hired one more person for the reception area for better customer service. Additionally, you could expand the seating area as well as provide good quality chairs for seating arrangements. It would be good for our company's reputation and visitors would feel more comfortable.
I hope you would like my suggestions and I look forward to your response.
Yours faithfully,
Jagjit Kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The candidate addresses all parts of the task requirements adequately. The letter begins appropriately with 'Dear Mr. Parker,' and covers the three bullet points outlined in the prompt. First, the writer describes the complaints regarding the reception area, specifically mentioning long waiting times and a lack of proper seating. Second, the importance of the reception area is explained by highlighting its role in creating a good company image. Finally, practical suggestions are provided, such as hiring an additional receptionist and expanding the seating area. The purpose of the letter is clear throughout, and the ideas are relevant, though they could be slightly more extended and supported to reach higher bands. Overall, the task is successfully fulfilled with a clear tone appropriate for a general correspondence.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter exhibits a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from describing the problem to explaining its importance and offering solutions. The text is divided into logical paragraphs that separate the different points effectively. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'Additionally,' and 'as a result,' although some transitions are slightly repetitive or mechanical. Referencing is generally clear, though minor errors in cohesion occur at the sentence level. The opening and closing formulas ('Dear Mr. Parker,' and 'Yours faithfully,') are correctly utilized, ensuring that the letter format is respected throughout the response.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task. Phrases like 'customer service,' 'company's reputation,' and 'seating arrangements' show appropriate word choices for a workplace context. However, there are noticeable lexical errors, such as 'neede to improvement' instead of 'needs improvement,' and incorrect verb forms like 'could hired' instead of 'could hire.' While these errors do not impede communication, they restrict the lexical score. The vocabulary is generally sufficient for the task requirements, but it lacks the precision and flexibility characteristic of higher band levels.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some variety in structure. For instance, the writer successfully uses subordinate clauses, as seen in 'Customers say that there is only one person...'. However, there are several grammatical and mechanical errors throughout the text, including 'I am writing this letter to regarding,' 'there are several complaints have been made,' and missing articles or prepositions in sentences like 'Reception area is a very important because it is main part...'. Despite these frequent minor errors in grammar, they rarely impede overall communication and the meaning remains clear.
