Student answer (Band 8.0)
Dear Sir,
With due respect, I have been working in this prestigious organisation for a long time, and I am writing this letter in order to suggest some improvements regarding the complaints of visitors about the reception area.
At the outset, I have received several complaints about the seating arrangement of the reception area. Visitors have complained that there are an insufficient number of chairs and sofas placed in the waiting area. Not only do they have to wait for several minutes standing outside in the corridor, but there is no proper air-conditioning facility available outside. Sometimes, they have to spend 10-20 minutes outside, standing in the hot weather.
Further, I believe the reception area is an extremely valuable place in our company, as it creates the first impression of the company's environment. It is the company's responsibility to treat its guests in an appropriate way. Moreover, the employees working at the reception desk are also entitled to work in a comfortable and organised environment.
Lastly, I would appreciate it if a considerable amount of furniture were placed in the reception area, including tables, chairs and sofas. In addition, I suggest installing one more air-conditioner in the other side because the room is quite spacious.
Your prompt attention to this matter is highly appreciated.
Yours faithfully, Date: 24-09-2026

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0
The response covers all parts of the task thoroughly and appropriately. You successfully describe the complaints regarding the seating arrangement and the lack of air-conditioning, as demonstrated when you mention that visitors 'have to wait for several minutes standing outside in the corridor'. You clearly explain why the reception area is important, noting that 'it creates the first impression of the company's environment', and you provide practical suggestions for improvement, such as 'installing one more air-conditioner in the other side'. The tone is formal and well-suited to a letter to a manager. Ideas are well-developed and all bullet points of the prompt are fully satisfied.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 8.0
The letter exhibits clear logical organization and progression throughout. Ideas are grouped logically into paragraphs, moving smoothly from the opening purpose to the specific complaints, the importance of the reception, and finally to your recommendations. You use appropriate cohesive devices to connect your ideas, such as 'At the outset', 'Further', 'Moreover', and 'In addition'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph serving a distinct function in the structure of the formal letter. Referencing is clear and referencing words are well managed.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
The vocabulary used is sufficient and demonstrates a good range appropriate for a professional context. You successfully employ less common and precise vocabulary items such as 'prestigious organisation', 'insufficient number', 'spacious', and 'prompt attention'. While the vocabulary is generally natural and allows for clear communication, there are occasional slightly less natural collocations, such as 'valuable place' instead of 'valuable asset' or 'important area'. Overall, the lexical range is flexible enough to convey precise meanings without impeding communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 8.0
The response displays a good variety of complex sentence structures, such as 'Not only do they have to wait for several minutes standing outside..., but there is no proper air-conditioning facility available...' and conditional or hypothetical structures like 'I would appreciate it if a considerable amount of furniture were placed...'. The majority of sentences are error-free, and you demonstrate solid control over grammar and punctuation. There are only occasional minor slips that do not interfere with understanding. Punctuation and layout are appropriate for a formal business letter.
