Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing this letter to provide you some suggestions on how to improve the reception area. I know that this area plays a vital role in any hospitality industry as it is a first impression of the hotel. I have heard many problems regarding communication. People often say that receptionists do not know much information and direct visitors/ calls to another department. In addition to that the services are slow as only one person is working there. I have few changes in my mind which would make this area a better place and attract a lot of visitors.

First and foremost, a receptionist should wear tidy and formal clothes, which would give a good impression and confidence to them so they can talk and direct customers more effectively. Secondly, hiring more employees and provide them training so they are familier with all rulles and regulations.

Finally, hire a supervisor so he can regularly monitor the reception area to ensure that visitors are greeted promptly and that their enquiries are handled efficiently.

I trust you that you will take prompt action to this matter.

Yours faithfully,

Shriya Chauhan.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response effectively covers all bullet points required by the task prompt. You successfully described the complaints made regarding communication issues and slow service, explained why the reception area is important by noting it provides a first impression, and provided practical suggestions for improvement such as dress codes, hiring additional staff, and appointing a supervisor. The tone of the letter is generally appropriate, although there is a slight confusion in the text where you mention 'hospitality industry' and 'hotel,' whereas the prompt states visitors to your company. However, all three bullet points are clearly addressed and supported with relevant ideas, aligning well with the Band 7 requirements for task achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter is logically organised with a clear opening, body paragraphs addressing separate recommendations, and a suitable sign-off. Cohesive devices such as 'First and foremost,' 'Secondly,' and 'Finally' are used to structure your suggestions effectively. Paragraphing is handled reasonably well, separating the introduction, body points, and conclusion. However, referencing and transitions could be smoother in places, such as the transition into the sentence 'I have few changes in my mind.' Despite minor mechanical usage of cohesive markers, the overall arrangement is coherent, leading to a solid Band 6.5 or 7.0 performance.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'vital role,' 'promptly,' 'efficiently,' and 'enquiries.' There are some vocabulary and spelling errors, such as 'familier' instead of familiar and 'rulles' instead of rules, alongside minor collocation slips like 'provide them training' (which should be 'provide them with training' or 'train them'). You also mistakenly refer to a 'hotel' instead of a company. Nevertheless, the lexical choices successfully convey your meaning and satisfy the criteria for Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writing exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as the relative clause in 'clothes, which would give a good impression.' There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings throughout the text, including 'provide you some suggestions' (missing 'with'), 'I have few changes' (missing 'a'), and 'action to this matter' (preposition error for 'action on'). Punctuation and sentence structures are generally clear enough that communication is not impeded, placing the grammar score securely at Band 6.
