Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Kamal,
I am writing this letter to bring to your attention that our office reception area has received several complaints due to its size.
I have been receiving complaints from customers since last month about the size and sitting arrangements of reception area. The area was not appropriate in the times of large events, due to its size as it becomes congested, and nowhere to sit while waiting. Moreover, no more then two staff can stand there and help together, which will automatically reduce wait time while handling more than one customer at a time.
Reception area is an important part of every compnay, as it serves basic enquaries of the visitors and the customers. If the area was poorly built and not maintained properly it will put negative impact on people, and they will not recomend it to other people.
To improve the area, I would love to give suggestions, such as, we should make the area large by extending it to the vacant place and make a seating area there, so that people do not have to wait outside, and also installing a drinking water.
I look forward to your prompt response. Please let me know if you need any kind of assistance.
Warm regards,
Roop

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response covers all three bullet points required in the task instructions well. You successfully describe the complaints made regarding the size and seating arrangements in the reception area, explain why the reception area is important for serving basic enquiries and creating a first impression, and suggest practical improvements such as extending the space into a vacant area and adding a drinking water dispenser. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager, and the ideas are logically developed throughout the response, earning a solid Band 7.0 for this criterion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter is clearly structured with an appropriate salutation and sign-off, and it is divided into logical paragraphs that handle distinct aspects of the prompt. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'If', and 'To improve the area' are used to connect ideas smoothly. While paragraphing and progression are generally clear, some referencing and transitional links feel slightly mechanical, such as 'To improve the area, I would love to give suggestions, such as...'. Overall, the organization is clear and easy to follow, supporting a Band 6.5 score.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'congested', 'enquaries' (spelled enquiries), 'maintained', and 'prompt response'. There are a few lexical inaccuracies and spelling errors, such as writing 'compnay' instead of 'company', 'recomend' instead of 'recommend', and the phrase 'no more then two staff' instead of 'than'. Despite these occasional errors, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly without impeding communication, fitting the Band 6.0 descriptor well.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional clauses ('If the area was poorly built...') and infinitive phrases. However, there are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, including tense inconsistencies ('If the area was poorly built... it will put') and preposition choices. For example, 'nowhere to sit while waiting' lacks a subject, and 'help together' is awkward. Punctuation also needs minor polishing, such as spacing around commas. These errors do not impede communication, placing your grammar performance at a Band 6.0.
