Student answer (Band 5.5)

Subject- Suggestions for the improvment of reception area.

Hello manager,

Hope you are doing well,

I'm Radhika, a resident of your building, and I'm writing this email regarding a reception issue that all the other people have been facing for a few months. Everyone in the building is complaining that the reception area is not cleaned. It does not look good whenever are visitors come to us. After looking at the entrance, they feel the building in which we are living is cheap. It is the main area of the building everyone judges are lifestyle by looking into the place we like and it is embarrassing for us to live in such an unorganized place.

I want to suggest some solutions to keep the area clean. The first thing the management should do is to hire a full-time cleaner. Also, you should personally inform every resident of the building not to litter in the reception area. If everyone took the responsibilitty to keep the area clean. half of the job will be done by its own.

I hope these solution will help you to improve the area.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response covers all three bullet points from the prompt, although the context is slightly mixed up between a company workplace and a residential building (the prompt asks about a reception area where visitors arrive to your company, while the student mentions being a resident of the building). However, the complaints are clearly described (lack of cleaning, unorganized look), the importance is explained (visitors judge the living standard and lifestyle), and improvements are suggested (hire a cleaner, remind residents not to litter). The tone is somewhat inappropriate for a manager (addressing them as 'Hello manager' and claiming to be a resident), but the core communicative goals of the task are met well enough to achieve a solid band score.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The letter has an identifiable overall progression, moving from the introduction and complaints to the importance and finally the suggestions. However, paragraphing is somewhat weak, with the letter compressed into too few blocks, and the sign-off is abrupt. Cohesive devices are basic and occasionally repetitive ('The first thing... Also...'). Referencing is sometimes unclear, such as 'everyone judges are lifestyle by looking into the place we like'. While the logical flow is easy enough to follow, the mechanical nature of the cohesion and the lack of proper paragraphing prevent it from reaching a higher band.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, though it contains some noticeable errors and unnatural collocations. Examples include 'improvment' (spelling), 'judges are lifestyle' (wrong pronoun/collocation for 'our'), and 'take the responsibilitty' (spelling). The writer attempts some less common vocabulary such as 'unorganized' and 'embarrassing', but the range remains limited and basic. Errors in word choice and spelling are present, but they do not impede overall communication. To improve, the student needs to expand their range of functional workplace vocabulary and ensure correct spelling and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional structures ('If everyone took the responsibilitty... half of the job will be done'). However, there are noticeable grammatical errors and tense inconsistencies throughout the text, including 'whenever are visitors come' (grammatical confusion), 'If everyone took... half of the job will be done' (mixed conditionals), and 'I hope these solution will help' (singular/plural mismatch). Punctuation and capitalization are generally acceptable, but frequent minor errors in grammar reduce the overall accuracy of the writing.
