Student answer (Band 8.0)
Dear Mr Smith,
I am writing to suggest some improvements to the reception area, following several complaints from visitors and clients.
The main concerns are that the reception area often looks untidy and that there is insufficient seating for visitors during busy periods. Some visitors have also mentioned that the reception desk is difficult to identify, while others have complained about long waiting times. In addition, the lighting is rather poor, which makes the area appear less welcoming.
The reception area is particularly important because it creates the first impression of our company. A clean, comfortable and professional environment would make visitors feel more welcome and would reflect positively on our organisation.
I would suggest installing clearer signs, adding comfortable seating and improving the lighting. We could also introduce a visitor check-in system and ensure that the reception desk is adequately staffed during peak hours.
I hope you will consider these suggestions.
Yours sincerely,
Mariam

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0
The student has successfully addressed all three bullet points of the task. Firstly, the complaints made by visitors and clients are clearly described, such as the area looking untidy, insufficient seating, difficulty identifying the reception desk, long waiting times, and poor lighting. Secondly, the writer explains why the reception area is important, noting that it creates the first impression of the company and reflects on the organisation. Finally, practical improvements are suggested, including installing clearer signs, adding seating, improving lighting, and introducing a visitor check-in system. The tone is entirely appropriate for a letter to a manager in a General Training context. The requirements of the task are fully met with clear, relevant ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 8.0
The letter exhibits a very clear logical organisation and progression. The response is divided into appropriate paragraphs, each serving a distinct function: introduction, describing complaints, explaining importance, offering suggestions, and a polite sign-off. Cohesive devices such as 'The main concerns are', 'Some visitors have also mentioned', 'while others have complained', and 'In addition' are used accurately and naturally to guide the reader through the text. Referencing is consistently clear, and the paragraphing is skilfully handled to ensure smooth transitions between ideas.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.5
The student demonstrates a sufficient and appropriate range of vocabulary for a formal workplace letter. Words and phrases such as 'insufficient seating', 'adequately staffed', 'reflect positively', and 'unwelcoming' show good lexical control and stylistic awareness. Collocations are natural, and there are no spelling or word-choice errors in the text. While the vocabulary is not overly sophisticated or rare, it is precise, fully adequate for the task, and used with good flexibility to convey the intended message effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 8.0
The response features a very good mix of simple and complex sentence forms. The writer successfully employs relative clauses ('which makes the area appear less welcoming'), conditional-style suggestions ('would make visitors feel more welcome'), and compound structures ('A clean, comfortable and professional environment...'). Grammar and punctuation are under excellent control, with error-free sentences dominating the text. The punctuation of the greeting and sign-off is also correct. The control demonstrated aligns well with the higher band descriptors.
