Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to bring to your notice the recent performance observation carried out during the audit session with front the desk attendant.

Firstly, I observed that the waiting space at the front desk is not comfortable for our clients, vendors and visitors. There are few chairs compared to the number of visitors received daily. Also, it is also important that the reception is the first meeting point to external persons. Hence, I see it as the face of the company, which should reflect the company's hospitality.

Furthermore, I would like to recommend few changes to be applied that would add beauty, value and relaxed environment to our visitors. We can replace the current chairs with more ergonomic friendly ones, we can also extend the waiting room space. In addition, coffee and snacks can be provided to visitors at arrival, we can also display our achievements and projects on magazines, so that visitors would be occupies during their waiting period.

Finally, the above recommendations are subject to your review and approval. I sincerely suggest we give room to improvements.

Yours Faithfully

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The candidate has successfully addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt. First, the complaints regarding the uncomfortable waiting space and insufficient chairs are clearly described. Second, the importance of the reception area as the 'first meeting point' and 'the face of the company' is articulated. Third, practical suggestions are provided, including replacing chairs with ergonomic alternatives, expanding the space, offering refreshments, and displaying company projects. The tone is appropriate for a workplace letter to a manager. Although the opening sentence mentions a 'performance observation carried out during the audit session with front the desk attendant', which slightly confuses the context of the complaints, the core requirements of the task are fully covered, meeting the criteria for Band 6.5 to 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter is structured with a clear overall arrangement, using distinct paragraphs for the introduction, the description of complaints and importance, suggestions, and the concluding sign-off. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Also', 'Furthermore', and 'In addition' are employed to guide the reader through the points. However, some referencing and transitions are a bit mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'Also, it is also important that the reception is the first meeting point to external persons', where repetition occurs. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, and the logical progression is generally maintained throughout the response, justifying a solid Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, demonstrating some attempts at less common lexical items such as 'ergonomic friendly' (though technically phrased as 'ergonomic'), 'performance observation', and 'achievements and projects'. There are some word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'to external persons' instead of 'for external visitors', and 'give room to improvements' rather than 'room for improvement'. Spelling is generally accurate, and the vocabulary employed allows the message to be communicated clearly, fitting the Band 6.0 descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms. The candidate successfully uses complex structures, such as relative clauses ('so that visitors would be occupies during their waiting period') and conditional ideas. However, there are notable grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, including 'front the desk attendant' (word order error), 'recommend few changes' (missing article), 'relaxed environment to our visitors' (preposition choice), and 'would be occupies' (passive voice agreement error). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede overall communication, placing the grammatical performance at a Band 6.0.
