Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Manager,

I am writing to suggest some improvements to the reception area, following the recent complain from visitors.

Firstly, I believe the reception area should be made more comfortable and welcoming. At present, there are not enough chairs for visitors particularly during busy periods. Some visitors have also mentioned that the reception are looks rather old-fashioned and that there is not enough clear information about where they should go.

It is really important place of the company that visitors see. A clean, comfortable and well-organized reception can create a positive first impression and demonstrate that our company is professional and welcoming.

I would therefore suggest adding more comfortable chairs and providing some magazines or company brochures for visitors to read while waiting. Apart from that arrange some small water bottles for refreshment. The area could also be improved with better lighting, some plants and wall paints. Furthermore, please put the sign for directing visitors to different departments. Finally, digital checking- in system could help reduce waiting times and make the arrival process more efficient.

I hope these suggestions will be useful. I would be happy to discuss these idea with you Further.

Thank you.

Yours faithfully,

Krupa Maisuria

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response covers all three bullet points required in the task instructions clearly and effectively. You successfully describe the complaints made by visitors, such as the lack of seating, the outdated appearance, and poor signage, by mentioning that "there are not enough chairs for visitors" and "the reception are looks rather old-fashioned." Furthermore, you adequately explain why the reception area is important, noting how it creates a "positive first impression" of the company's professionalism. Finally, you offer practical and relevant suggestions for improvement, including adding comfortable chairs, plants, lighting, and a digital check-in system. Your purpose is clear throughout, and the tone is appropriately polite and formal for a workplace letter to a manager. Ideas are sufficiently developed, fulfilling all the requirements of a Band 7 performance for Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, body, and conclusion. You use paragraphing appropriately to separate different points, such as describing the complaints in the second paragraph, the importance in the third, and the suggestions in the fourth. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader through your ideas, using transition words like "Firstly", "Apart from that", and "Furthermore". However, there are some minor mechanical or slightly unnatural cohesive transitions, such as starting a paragraph with "It is really important place of the company that visitors see." Nonetheless, the overall progression of information is clear and easy to follow, justifying a solid Band 6.5 or 7.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your ideas with adequate precision. You successfully use functional business and general terms such as "professionalism", "reception area", "efficient", and "brochures". There are, however, some noticeable lexical and word-form errors, such as spelling "complaint" as "complain" in the first paragraph, writing "reception are" instead of "area", and using an awkward collocation in "arrange some small water bottles". Despite these occasional errors in word choice and spelling, your vocabulary is adequate for the task and communication is never impeded, fitting the Band 6 descriptors well.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional or participial clauses such as "while waiting" and "to discuss these idea with you Further." There are several grammatical inaccuracies and punctuation errors throughout the letter, including "the reception are looks" (article/noun agreement), "Apart from that arrange some small water bottles" (missing subject/verb structure), "please put the sign" (missing plural/article precision), and capitalization/punctuation issues like "Further." near the end. While these errors are noticeable and detract slightly from accuracy, your complex structures are mostly understandable and do not impede the overall flow of communication, aligning well with a Band 6 score.
