Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mr. Jay,

I am writing in response to your request for suggestions to improve our reception area following recent visitor complaints.

Many clients have complained that the reception chairs are old and there are not enough seats when the office is busy, so people have to stand. In addition, the lights are too dark, so visitors cannot read their papers or use their laptops easily while waiting.

The reception area is crucial because it forms the very first impression of our company. A welcoming, highly professional environment reflects our core values and sets a positive tone for all Following business meetings.

To address these issues, I suggest replacing the current chairs , comfortable seating to maximize space. Upgrading to brighter LED lighting would also significantly improve the atmosphere. Finally, providing a clean water dispenser and updated company brochures would enhance the visitor experience.

Thank you for considering my recommendations.

Yours sincerely,

Sanket Suthar

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You successfully covered all parts of the task in a clear and appropriate manner. You described the specific complaints regarding old chairs, lack of seating, and poor lighting. You clearly explained why the reception area is important by noting that it creates the first impression and sets a tone for future meetings. Finally, you provided practical suggestions such as replacing chairs, upgrading lighting, and adding a water dispenser. Your ideas were extended and supported well, though you slightly over-generalized when stating 'people have to stand,' which kept the response at this solid level. To reach the highest bands, you could have elaborated further on how these changes would directly impact visitor satisfaction or business outcomes.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

Your letter demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression throughout. You used an appropriate formal greeting and sign-off, and your paragraphs were structured logically around each bullet point of the prompt. You used cohesive devices reasonably well, such as 'In addition,' 'The reception area is crucial because,' and 'To address these issues.' While referencing and paragraphing were managed effectively, some transitions felt slightly standard rather than entirely seamless, which is typical of this band level. To move higher, you could aim for even more sophisticated and subtle cohesive linking between sentences to ensure the flow is completely unobtrusive.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You demonstrated an adequate and sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using less common lexical items such as 'crucial,' 'professional environment,' 'atmosphere,' and 'recommendations.' Your word choices are generally accurate and effectively convey your meaning without impeding communication. However, there is a minor mechanical slip in the fourth paragraph where a comma was placed incorrectly before 'comfortable seating' ('current chairs , comfortable seating'), indicating minor control issues with phrasing. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations and precise business terminology, such as 'first impressions' or 'ergonomic seating,' to showcase a wider lexical flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You successfully utilized a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses like 'while waiting' and 'which forms the very first impression.' There are several error-free sentences, showing a good control of grammar and punctuation overall. However, there is a minor grammatical slip in the third paragraph with the phrase 'Following business meetings,' where the capitalization of 'Following' is incorrect for the middle of a sentence. Additionally, some of your sentence structures tend to follow a similar pattern. To achieve a higher score, you would need to produce a wider variety of complex structures with even greater frequency of error-free sentences and flawless punctuation.
