Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Kristie,
I am writing in response to your request for suggestions to improve the reception area at our office.
Actually, the major concern of the visitors is the width of the area. People report that the space is very small with a bunch of equipments in the way. They often find it very hard to stand especially during rush hours. Moreover, there are some complaints about the noise coming from auditorium which is right beside the reception. The excessive noise from the auditorium causes inconvenienece.
You need to take certain measures to improve the reception because it is the most important area. It has considerable role in building a company's reputation.
According to me, moving the unessential stuff from the reception area such as printing machines and tables will be beneficial in opening up space. In fact, a sound proof system in the entire building will be helpful to reduce the noise concerns.
I hope these approaches will be a meaningful solution to the problems which customers are facing. Let me know if you need any further assistance.
Kind regards,
Navneet

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all three bullet points required in the prompt. You clearly describe the complaints regarding the cramped space and auditorium noise, explain the importance of the reception area in building the company's reputation, and suggest practical improvements such as removing unessential equipment and installing a soundproof system. Your position is clear throughout the letter. While the ideas are relevant and generally well-supported, some points could be extended further to reach a higher level of development. For instance, explaining the specific impact of the noise on visitors would have added more depth to your argument. Nevertheless, all parts of the task are adequately addressed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
Your letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving smoothly from the opening purpose to the complaints, the importance of the area, your suggestions, and finally a polite closing. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'In fact', and 'According to me' to guide the reader through your arguments. However, some of these transitions could be varied or used more flexibly to avoid a slightly mechanical feel. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, ensuring the structure of a formal workplace letter is well maintained.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'reputation', 'beneficial', and 'unessential'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and spelling that prevent a higher score. For example, 'equipments' is incorrectly used as a countable noun, and 'inconvenienece' contains a spelling error. Additionally, phrases like 'According to me' are somewhat unnatural in formal business correspondence compared to alternatives like 'In my view'. Your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate your message clearly, but precision and control in word forms need improvement.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
Your writing shows a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a solid foundation in English grammar. You successfully use relative clauses and modal verbs, such as 'I am writing in response to your request' and 'moving the unessential stuff from the reception area will be beneficial'. There are some minor errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('a bunch of equipment' instead of 'a bunch of equipments') and a missing hyphen in 'sound proof'. However, these errors do not impede communication, and your control over sentence structures meets the criteria for this band level well.
