Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Manager,
Following several complaints received about the reception area from visitors of our company, I am delighted to share with you my views.
For instance, one of the most frequent complaint that we used to receive is that the reception area are most of the time left unattended. When I querry with the receptionist, she told me that she is not being replaced during her lunch break or whenever she is absent from work. Therefore, we could think of putting two persons there and see how it works.
Another problem is that the area is not well directed. People do not know which way to take to go on higher levels. We could put some signage at the entrance to facilate visitors coming in.
There is also the issue that the reception area is not well lit. It is a bit dark and not welcoming. So, we could think of repainting and redecorate that part with some beautiful plants and have a corner with new sofas and a bookshelf with magazines.
I hope that these ideas could be considered and finally I am also thinking of putting a suggestion box at the reception so that we could get real feedback from visitors.
Regards,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt, addressing the complaints, the importance of the reception area, and suggesting improvements. However, the explanation of why the reception area is important is somewhat implicit rather than explicitly stated, which places this aspect under-developed. For instance, mentioning that the area is 'not welcoming' or left unattended touches upon its significance, but this idea is not fully extended. The tone is appropriate for a workplace letter to a manager, and all bullet points are addressed, though the level of elaboration varies across the points.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The text demonstrates a clear overall arrangement with logical progression from describing the problems to offering solutions. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with distinct paragraphs handling individual issues such as unattended reception, poor direction, and lighting. Cohesive devices are generally well managed, using transition phrases like 'For instance', 'Another problem is', and 'There is also the issue that'. While referencing is mostly clear, a half-band strength is shown through the smooth organization of ideas, although some mechanical transitions keep it from reaching a higher descriptor level.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
An adequate range of vocabulary is used for the task, successfully communicating the intended message. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'unattended', 'signage', and 'suggestion box', but these are accompanied by some word-choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as writing 'frequent complaint' instead of 'frequent complaints' or 'querry' instead of 'queried'. Spelling and word-choice errors are present, for example 'facilate' and 'redecorate', but they do not impede communication, which aligns well with the expected band standard.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writing exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating adequate control over basic structures. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as subject-verb agreement issues in 'the reception area are most of the time left unattended' and tense inconsistencies like 'she told me that she is not being replaced'. However, these errors rarely impede communication. The use of complex structures shows an attempt at variety, though minor flaws persist, which reflects a solid mix of correct and flawed sentences.
