Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Kajal,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to express concerns about front desk which have been made by several visitors.

To explain the complaints more clearly, the major problem is seating arrangement because there are few seating chairs in front of the reception area. Another concern is reception area is not properly clean and hygienic, which has been noticed by customers.

There are numerous reasons why front desk area is crucial. One of the main reasons is that many people judge the company reputation by checking the reception area. Another reason is that visitors spend almost one hour in the reception area, so they can notice several important thing which are essential for them.

Undoubtedly, resolving this problems promptly restore customers confidence and trust in our service. It would be great if we could clean the area every day with disinfected liquid and try to make it neat and clean. I would also request you to add extra chairs in the reception area, which provides them comfort and relaxation.

Please let me know if you need any help, and I look forward to your postive response.

Yours sincerely,

Alpeshkumar

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You successfully covered all parts of the task by describing the visitor complaints, explaining the importance of the reception area, and suggesting practical improvements. Your position and purpose are clear throughout the letter. The ideas are generally extended and supported, such as when you explain why visitors judge the company by the reception area. However, there is a slight tendency to over-generalise or lean on repetitive explanations in the second body paragraph, such as repeating the phrase 'reception area' and similar reasons for its importance. To reach a higher level, you could develop your ideas with greater depth and nuance, perhaps by mentioning specific types of visitor feedback or detailing the exact layout changes needed rather than general statements.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

Your letter displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You start with a polite opening and an overview of the letter's purpose, move logically through the complaints, explain their importance, and conclude with actionable suggestions and a professional sign-off. You use cohesive devices effectively, such as 'To explain the complaints more clearly', 'Another concern is', and 'Undoubtedly', which guide the reader smoothly from one point to the next. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph dedicated to a distinct aspect of the prompt. To achieve an even higher band, you could aim for more varied and subtle cohesive relationships, ensuring that referencing words like 'this problems' are flawlessly integrated without minor mechanical slips.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrated an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating your points with terms like 'hygienic', 'promptly', and 'restor[e]'. You attempted less common vocabulary such as 'disinfected liquid' and 'reputation', though there are some inaccuracies in word choice, form, and collocation, such as 'seating chairs' (redundant) and 'postive' (spelling error), as well as grammatical-lexical slips like 'resolving this problems' instead of 'these problems'. These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the writing from achieving greater precision and flexibility. To move up, you should focus on mastering less common lexical collocations and ensuring accurate word forms and spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You used a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a solid control over basic structures and attempting more intricate constructions such as 'which has been noticed by customers' and 'which provides them comfort and relaxation'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('concerns about front desk' instead of 'the front desk'), subject-verb agreement issues ('this problems' instead of 'these problems'), and minor preposition or pluralisation slips. However, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, showing solid control while leaving room for a wider variety of error-free complex structures.
