Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mr Tim,

I am writing in response to your request for suggestions on how to improve the reception area. I would like to outline the issues and propose some potential solutions.

Firstly, the most frequent complaint is the lack of seating in waiting area. Visitors show frustration with limited space to sit which create negative first impression of clients. Additionally, the decor is outdated and area is poorly lit. The reception area is essential part as it is first point of contact.

I suggest following changes. Mainly, we can increase the accomodation by adding more chairs and sofas for the waiters. Along with this, we can add the LED for the entertainment purposes. Morever, we can change the color of the walls to make them more lively along with certains lights. and provide internet connection to each corner.

With this I hope we can improve those problems to the best. Ihope you like the ideas and if so we can start working on it.

Yours Sincerely,

Ram

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt, addressing the complaints made, explaining the importance of the reception area, and offering suggestions for improvement. The writer adopts an appropriate semi-formal tone for a letter to a manager. However, some ideas show features of under-development. For instance, the complaints are listed rather briefly without much expansion, such as mentioning 'lack of seating in waiting area' and that 'decor is outdated' without detailing specific user feedback. Similarly, the suggestions are presented as a rapid list rather than fully elaborated proposals. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to extend and support these ideas with more detailed descriptions and clearer justifications for each proposed change.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear beginning and ending, appropriately structured with paragraphs for the introduction, body points, and conclusion. Progression is visible as the writer transitions smoothly from outlining the purpose of the letter to discussing complaints, highlighting the area's importance, and finally giving suggestions. However, cohesion relies on somewhat mechanical and repetitive devices, such as 'Firstly,' 'Additionally,' and 'Morever,' with referencing occasionally missing necessary articles (e.g., 'waiting area' without an article). Paragraphing is utilised sufficiently, but paragraph 3 is a dense block of rapid suggestions that would benefit from better internal logical sequencing. To achieve a higher level of cohesion, the writer should use a wider variety of transitional phrases and ensure referencing across sentences is more fluid and natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate to communicate the message, demonstrating sufficient range for the task with attempts at less common items such as 'outdated,' 'essential part,' and 'entertainment purposes.' However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies, inappropriate word choices, and spelling errors that prevent a higher score. For example, the student writes 'accomodation' instead of 'accommodation' or 'capacity,' uses 'waiters' instead of 'visitors' or 'guests,' misspells 'Morever' as 'Moreover,' and uses 'certains lights' which is awkward collocation. The word choices are sometimes repetitive, and the control over less common vocabulary lacks precision. To improve, the writer should expand their working vocabulary for business contexts, pay closer attention to spelling, and focus on natural collocations rather than literal translations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over basic sentence structures. There are several error-free sentences, particularly in the opening and closing paragraphs. However, grammatical errors occur across articles, prepositions, and plurals. Examples include missing articles ('lack of seating in waiting area', 'as it is first point of contact'), agreement errors ('which create negative first impression'), and awkward prepositional usage. Punctuation issues are also present, such as a stray full stop followed by lowercase in 'certains lights. and provide internet connection'. While these errors do not impede overall communication, they prevent the text from reaching a higher band where a greater frequency of error-free complex sentences and stricter grammatical accuracy are required.
